Service Intervals - WTF?

Car had five year service (although only on 20,159 miles at the time) on 21 May this year, afterwards I remember it saying 16k miles until the next service. Countdown since then has been bonkers, it would seem that every mile I do knocks 50 miles off the countdown (wild guess, not accurate). Yesterday I was on 4700 until next service and after a day totalling around 250 miles it's now down to 3666 until the next service.

Car is now on 25,262 and by the time I get to 28k I reckon it'll be time for another bloody service. Anyone had similar experiences? Bit confused if I'm honest!

Are you doing short trips with it?

They can tell if their oil is getting diluted due to short trips/failed DPF regens and that will massively reduce the service intervals.

I was up until around 2.5 months ago (16 miles each way, avg 40mph but up to 60 for half the time) but stopped doing those journeys for that very reason, oil dilution. Thing is my old Sport (V6) wasn't this bad so surprised to see it happening to the V8. 2017 Vogue SE

It’s the mileage you do, type of trip, length of trip, how spirited you are, and how hot the car gets. Pre and post covid my
Mileage has varied enormously. Some years I have had almost 16k miles between services, when driving long motorway journeys - 500 plus miles a day. Other years it’s been down to 7k miles between services, if its been driven for short infrequent journeys. If you do short slow journeys expect very low distances between Services. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Aye, don't have an issue with the time/distance between services being shorter or longer depending on the driving you do I'm just a bit surprised it's this rapid. If it was constant five mile journeys I could understand it but I thought 16 miles would be ok. I did the same journey for about 10 months in the RRS with no adverse effect on the mileage interval. Ask your local dealer/specialist to plug it in and read what the car thinks the oil dilution is currently sitting at and you’ll know if that’s the reason.

16 miles isn’t much by the time the car has come up to temperature. It takes around 20 minutes for a DPF to regenerate if I’m not mistaken. If it starts to do it during your 16 mile trip then it’s likely diluting the oil when you switch it off.

Someone with diagnostics should be able to tell you why the distance is falling so quickly though.

It will be fuel dilution, and shorter trips means you will possibly arrive at your destination when already in the middle of an active regen, you wont know its regenerating, you stop the car. So it has to start again and satisfy certain parameters before it starts regenerating again and the calculation is modified accordingly, which means miles off the service interval. Get a cheap diagnostic device and you can see how many failed regens you have had.

My wife's Jeep Renegade has a warning light that stays on until the regen has finished. Can one be activated with the IID tool?

So I thought I'd try my 16 miles each way commute today, that translated into 598 service miles.

I (as others do) just change the oil after about 6 months, I consider it 50 quid well spent, although I do occasional long journeys as well. Geoff

Trouble is I have the full on LR Approved Warranty and I really don't want to roger that through 'unapproved' servicing. 2017 Vogue SE
