Gearbox problems

Hi everyone, posting for a friend as I don’t own a FFRR anymore but a friend of mine has recently bought a pretty nice condition 3.6 TDV8 which unfortunately in my opinion from driving it a couple of miles has a torque converter on the way out, revs rise, juddering like driving over a cattle grid etc.

I had a Sport a few years ago that ended up costing about 2500 for a recon gearbox which I’m guessing is similar to what prices are for one now installed?.

There’s complete gearboxes with torque converters on eBay for 500-800 and do know someone with access to a pit and that would probably bolt a new box in over a weekend but unsure if the ZF boxes would require coding or would be plug and play?.

If not I said he might want to break it as he’s reluctant to pay 2.5k out on a 4k car or just take the hit and sell it as spares/repair.

Any advice would be great as I only really knew the basics on mine, gearboxes are a bit too technical for me!.

A Trap 

No coding required.

Do a fluid flush and filter changer (not just a fluid change, you only get about half the fluid out when dropping the oil pan) plus the bridge seal and mechatronic seals.

This should be your first strep. If it doesn’t cure the issue the flush was a good step before replacing the torque converter

What is the rough cost of replacing the torque converter?, if anyone knows of a garage in the SE that offers a replacement service I can point him in the right direction, I sort of hope he does keep it as the rest of the car is in pretty great condition for a 2007!.

Take it to Dartford Transmissions and Autocare for Martin Hind to look at it.
It's the go-to gearbox place in the SE 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

So first call was trying some of the anti shudder stuff to see if that sorted it out a bit, problem was the gearbox filler plug has completely rounded off and it’s on so tight even a hammer and chisel can’t get it to turn, friend has pretty much given up and decided he’d rather cut his losses.

If you search ZF 6 HP torque converter, there's several sellers who refurbish them online and especially if you send off your old one after, can be had quite affordably.

Then it's just the task of separating the box from the engine and shaft to the transfer box in order to replace it. I'm unsure of garage time but would expect it to be a day's work, so would expect a total bill in the region of £1,100 (£400 for the torque converter plus labour).

Garages quoting silly money won't want to do it because the vehicle will take their ramp all day and they can make more money from lots of small servicing jobs. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
