Buying Private

If the right cat came up in a private sale what would be the best way to get it checked over before purchase do you think?

Is it just better to wait for a MD car as most of the private buys are the same money anyway. tia.

You could pay a main dealer or a independent specialist to inspect the car if you could get the seller to agree to that and if the professional checker had a slot within the right time frame for seller and potential buyer; or you could just pay the likes of AA or RAC to do an inspection.

I just bought mine from a private seller, it has half a year or JLR extended warranty, the seller had to have it inspected and rectify any faults to be able to get a warranty.

They will do it up to 10 years or 100,000 miles...

Apparently it costs about £1,700 a year.... Thumbs Up Pete

At the time I got mine inspected by a local specialist Indy; one hour labour (£65) and a verbal debrief. Expect to pay maybe £300 if you want a written report you can rely on legally. I did have to get the seller to agree to drop the car in etc but as he believed in the car and a price had been agreed in principle he was happy to assist.

Yes, if it has no LR warranty currently, then if you have it MD health checked, you could then pay for the LR Warranty as long as the car is not 10 years old or has not done 100k miles - and provided any faults the inspection/ health check finds get rectified first.

We pay monthly for the LR Extended warranty. 10 months and no interest is charged. £168/ month without breakdown cover. It’s a lot but it’s a good warranty if you want the peace of mind. The beauty of paying monthly is, if you sell the car, you can stop the warranty immediately and without penalty. Pointless for us to lay out £1680 per year on that basis, especially as our current L405 will be going soon(er or later).

You have several levels of JLR warranty and the cheapest is £975 ish quid but has a spending limit of £3K per claim and is subject to the same 10yr or 100k miles... Thumbs Up

After much looking around, we got a MotorEasy 3-year premium warranty, which covers repairs up to the market value of the vehicle. After a bit of haggling, it was about £900 paid interest free over 12 months, then you have 2 “free” years.
Can’t comment on claims handling as we haven’t had any, but they can hardly be worse than JLR Rolling with laughter
Their documentation is very clear on what is and isn’t covered, which we liked.
From any warranty company, get a quotation and just wait. When they contact you, say you’re still shopping around, can they call back in a week? When they call back, tell them theirs is the most expensive. They will then start to discount, don’t be in any rush to get covered.
ME even agreed to waiver the inspection (at HALFORDS Shocked ) on our MY2017 when I told them it was going to a LR specialist for a multi-point checkover and full service, and had a full JLR service history, and I didn’t like the idea of letting Halfords loose on such an expensive vehicle Shocked
One downside with ME is no cover for first 3 months, not sure if others are similar, so you pay for 36 months, but in reality only get 33. Do your research, and read all the T’s & C’s before going ahead Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

That sounds better Craig but i thinks that's just repairs with no breakdown recovery.

That looks very good value Gremlin , thx.

Never had a problem with LR warranty claims handling. You never actually need to deal with them directly as customer services at the MD deals with them. Customer services/ advisors at LR MD’s can be difficult to tie down though.

Gremlin - when you say it covers repairs, does that extend to replacement engines, replacement gearboxes, replacement Air Suspension etc etc - or is it just a warranty to cover repairs, like if the central locking stops working ?

@pcourtney, it depends which plan you choose, A B or C: (and pay accordingly!)

Exclamation DISCLAIMER: I have no connection or interest in this company, and I am not specifically recommending them, do you own due diligence in checking out all warranty providers, before making your own mind up! Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Sorry, I should have added that “A” is the most comprehensive, and closely matches that which a typical motor manufacturer would offer, so this is the one to go for if like me you suffer from SP (Sods’ Paranoia) or just love your FFRR to bits Laughing

Obviously, consumables are excluded (tyres, brake pads, fluids etc), so is paint or body damage etc. Read the documents, the “A” plan is pretty comprehensive. What I personally liked about this company is their clarity about what is, and what isn’t covered, in each case. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Having read your post about this company Gremlin and having seen your, IMO, recent, impressive forum history (you sound more OCD than me, which is a good thing when it comes to cars IMO), I enquired online with this company for a warranty for, not our RR, but a “modern classic’’ car (i.e. 20 years old)… unfortunately, the website wouldn’t let me proceed and advised me to ring them and to date, one can’t be *rsed Laughing Thumbs Up

Embarassed Very Happy one tries to help others as much as possible, but thank you old boy Wink

Like most things you have to pay for in life, rush it and pay full price, or take your time and play it clever, and it’s possible to make a substantial saving. Thumbs Up
