Well, a bit of an update:

N/S turbo unseized enough to test the rest of the vehicle, may well end up removing that turbo to strip it and clean the nozzle ring properly (what a pig to get at!)

Now battling a P0088 Fuel rail pressure high fault. This is where the true story of this purchase has started to unfold Rolling with laughter

Rigged up my gauges, checked transfer pressure, found a bit low. Replaced one of the most disgusting fuel filters I've seen for a good while, this put the transfer pressure right with no air present in the fuel. Pressure tested the return line to check the regulator anyway for good measure, all found OK.

Pulled the rail pressure sensor out...ordered another one from the numbers on the sensor. New sensor fitted....exactly the same Rolling Eyes

Turns out....its got the wrong rail preasure sensor in it Confused and of course I've just ended up with a new wrong sensor Laughing

So, bit of ebay browsing, found what is supposed to be in it....ordered and fitted...... now just sits there reading 1500psi and doesn't alter. Made an overlay harness from the ECU to the sensor, no different. OK so we're into either a duff new sensor or an ECU fault........the hunt continues!

I’m doing a few jobs on a friends TDV8 just now which is intermittently throwing a high fuel pressure fault as well.

Be interesting to see what you find on it.

Will keep you posted! This one does it immediately on startup, if you clear the fault with it running, you can hear the the injectors bark a bit as the rail pressure rises, then the fault becomes active and cuts the rail pressure back again.....

Forgot to mention, I've also replaced the pressure control valve in the high pressure pump......made absolutely no difference...

If you start it and take the revs straight to 1500rpm does it stop it?

On this one, if I start it and let it idle then the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree and it flags that code. If I take the revs up to say 1500rpm and hold it then the car is fine. Once it drops back to idle then it triggers the fault again.

I’ve got a few other issues to sort on this one before I get to the fuel rail pressure.

Good question, I don't think it'll actually let me rev it to 1500 without throwing the P0088 up and derating. It's an interesting one! I'm slightly leaning towards an ECU issue at the moment, I've ordered a genuine rail pressure sensor for it which should be with me this week, when that turns up I'll see what it does and hopefully scope the signal from it to get an idea of what's what. Information on these 3.6s seems a bit sketchy sadly, I'd love to know what the rail pressure map is for these at startup just to see what the desired pressure is.

One of my theories was that with the supposedly correct preasure sensor I tried previously was that it wasn't actually building past 1500psi when cranking so was below the hysteresis point for the correct sensor, but managed to check this with a manual gauge connected to the rail and at cranking speed will easily achieve >1500psi.....

The trick with this one is to start it with your foot slightly on the throttle so it doesn’t get a chance to idle.

If I find anything wrong on this one in the meantime I’ll post on this thread Smile

Fatboy Slim, where did you get the pressure control valve, all I have read its only available with the complete HP pump. I have had very random P117e00 codes after going into limp mode which points to the valve. When I say random, I can go months in between the fault, turn off the engine, count to 10, restart and good to go until the next random episode. I thought I had cured it by removing the plug, adding new corrugated insulation and some snake oil 2stroke oil in the fuel. after 4 months it happened again yesterday. Do you think the valve could be swapped with the pump still in situ? 2007 TDV8 VSE

I had mine from Merlin diesel here in the UK https://www.merlindiesel.com/

There is some on ebay at the moment, have a look at items number eBay Item No. 273812199636

I don't think you're going to get away with replacing it in place, there's a rotary pump in the end housing that wants to drop off centre as you remove it, so you need to centralise it before refitting, fiddly in a vice so I think you'll really struggle on the vehicle. Keeping it all clean enough on the vehicle is going to be a problem as well, I actually carried out the work on mine inside a massive plastic bag to keep any atmospheric contamination out of it as best as possible Laughing it's not a bad pump to get off and it isn't timed. One of the easiest CR pumps I've removed actually.

Bit of an update...... think I've sorted it Very Happy

Turns out the "new" correct sensor I fitted was a dud! Replaced with a genuine Delphi sensor and all seems well!

There was a really good diesel shop on the outskirts of Melbournes CBD I used to deal with when I was working in Aus....Will see if I can find their details. They were mega helpful and were shipping bits of pump out to me all over the country Thumbs Up

Check the pressure sensor link harness connector as referred to in LTB01083.

I thought that only applies to the 4.4? I did check it on mine, in fact I made an overlay harness from the rail pressure sensor to the engine ECU Very Happy
