Here is good example of how aux. sump and oil pump works. And we can see in live how brand new scavening pump is not effective. Its just not pumping sometime, nobody know why. Probably due get air.

Oil pump is one place to look to cure smoke screens.
Just seen a guy on Facebook post about how he threw a new one on and cured his smoking

As I said earlier Gary, this is the first time I've used another oil other than Shell Helix AF-L.
I compared the Smith and Allan oil with some Shell I had left and the Shell seems thicker, more gloopy with the final drips out my filling jug.
Confusing when the handbook says Shell Helix but the oil cap says Castrol on it.
Someone else has mentioned that the S&A isn't totally fully synthetic when they claim it is.
Towing the caravan in 10 days so I'll see what happens. Thumbs Up

Hi Kevin, I've just read through this thread, I'm glad you got lucky with it not being turbos.

Did changing to Helix cure/reduce oil from 2nd turbo being burnt off?

Also, where is the 2nd sump? Can't seem to find anything online.

I've had my car a year now and around 9k miles. For the first 5k it would smoke on occasion when using big turbo (not had mod done). I then done an interim oil change, (no oil used according to the dash). Now it smokes a bit more often. She's due a service now and in the last 4k miles I've added a litre, which I don't think is unacceptable, especially as she's getting a little leggy now. However, its more than she was using before the change. I noticed straight away it was a bit more smokey and have thought from the beginning maybe it's the oil. Of course, I have no idea what the oil was that I took out.

Oil I'm using is Fuchs Titan GT1 5w30. It was from opie oils, but they no longer list it for my registration.

Spoke to Opie Oils,
They say AF-L has been discontinued and will the new one is Shell Helix Ultra Professional AJ-L 5w-30.

It meets WSS-M2C 934-B. Any had experience with it?

To sum up my experience with Smith and Allan oil.
Engine was using half a litre of oil every 300 miles since switching to S & A oil.
I confirmed this by draining the oil and measuring what came out. I refilled with the remaining S & A oil I had from 20 litres with the same result.
I bought some Shell Helix which is now AJ-L 5w30.
I've just done about 1500 miles with my 2 ton caravan on the back to Scotland. Not one puff of smoke and the oil gauge is still on full!!!
I can't explain this at all. Besides the S & A oil appearing a little thinner than the Shell I'm flummoxed.

Great. That’s what I’ll get now for this service. Thank you.

You mentioned earlier about draining the aux sump. Can you shed some light on where to find and how to drain this please?

Oil viscosity will not be exactly the marked grade as it's a range so some oils will be thinner or thicker at the same grade for a different brand and at different temperatures. Since using S&A I've had no smoke from mine and it's never used any between services. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yes JayGee, but I would have thought any C1 spec oil should perform the same. Unless parts of my engine are worn 'different, more advanced' than yours who knows.
Somewhere further up this post someone thought that S&A isn't FULLY synthetic. Could that make a difference?
Someone also said that theirs smoked on a certain brand of oil.
I just find it hard to believe that going back to the Shell Helix has cured the oil consumption.

Not many oils are fully/truly 'synthetic' and the ones that are cost ££££. Also fully synthetic oils are not as good at holding soot in suspension so it's a tradeoff between max performance with regards to friction reduction, heat capacity and film strength and service intervals. S&A may not be the best oil you can buy but if you are changing regularly at 5-7k intervals it's not bad for general use. If you were doing a lot of hard driving, towing, offroading and putting the engine under max loads regularly then I'd probably opt for a more expensive oil. Shell helix 'may just be at the upper limit of what is classed as a 30 grade and doesn't thin out as much as S&A but then again S&A may flow better when cold so helping scavenge the 2nd turbo sump? Smoking 2nd turbo and oil use may not be directly related. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Apparently Shell Helix is made from natural gas and has 50% less evaporation rate than conventional oils. So I think the S&A oil I used is now vapourised which explains everything. Rolling with laughter

Don’t S&A have some sort of link with Shell anyway?
