How to set HPFP timing on a SDV8? Woodruff key missing!!

Here's a weird situation. The car works fine in every situation but will throw P0088 code when reaching high revs, somewhere around 3,600 rpms. I've done sensor, harness, fpr, and now trying to see if it's the HPFP. Upon removing the pump the mechanic told me there isn't a woodruff key installed. I bought a used car so I have no idea if the previous owner had someone worked on it before but it is very unlikely since it only had 60k miles. So now I'm thinking if the gear pulley is slipping on HPFP shaft during high revs causing P0088 code.

I can order the woodruff key, but the bigger problem is how do I time the HPFP back to the original specification? Workshop manual instruction only says lock the crank pulley at 9 o clock (assuming that's TDC). Pull the HPFP using JLR tool to avoid pulley movement but it doesn't say anything about matching timing marks to know if I'm 100% on the spot.

The HPFP shaft does seem to have slight circular markings but no burrs or deformation, suggesting slippage.

Appreciate some help. Thanks.

Does this help, midway down page 2.

With engine at TDC, you use the special tool to set the gear position, the manual states the pump timing mark, which is actually the small exposed end of the woodruff key, confusing when initially looking at the pic in the wsm.

Once set you then use the 2 special pump installation pins to guide the pump into position without rotating it. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

Thanks 4RRS. Where does the exposed woodruff key timing reference need to align in order to get it spot on before installation? Does the current position from my picture seem right or totally off phased?

Seems like the workshop manual key is pointed to the other pump plunger on the highee position.

You need the special tooling as in my picture in the rebuild thread, it fits around the collar and then locks into the mounting holes. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

You mean the special tool will lock the gear pulley on a specific position where it will align the exposed woodruff key facing the taller side HPFP plunger?

Yes exactly that, once the gear is fitted onto the pump, the tool aligns with the flats on the gear and then aligns with the mounting holes. Have a look here: -

You'll also need the aligning Pins - special tool JLR-310-248, as per: -

The mechanic should have the tools for it I hope. If not, I'll have to put in an order. Thank you, I'll report back if this finally fixes my problems.

I think your thoughts are correct and it's certainly something that needs to be rectified if the woodruff key is missing, as you say they are availabe under part No. LR022970. I know many people don't time the pump, but at the end of the day if the manual has a procedure for it then in my book it should be done.

Wishing you luck! L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.
