Had another look at this today - clearly something is not right, I would assume the the camshaft timing between Bank 1 and Bank 2 should generally be very close...but looking at the live feed its not today..it was last time is checked.... this time way off..

Given this, it seems unlikely that the car would have suffered timing chain failure again just 8 months later, unless the original job was poorly done or involved faulty parts. Upon inspecting the chain through the oil filler cap and testing with a screwdriver, I observed very little play in the chain, which further diminishes the likelihood of timing chain failure. Additionally, while the engine was running rough, it did not produce the characteristic "can of nails" rattle typically associated with timing chain or VANOS issues.

One concerning discovery was the extensive cutting and splicing of the wiring harness. Much of the wiring showed evidence of crude repairs, such as twisted wires held together with tape, without proper soldering or insulation. This raised questions about the vehicle's repair history.

Initially, I identified a fault in the wiring to the Variable Timing Solenoid on Bank 2, as well as issues with one of the Bank 2 Camshaft Position Sensors. My approach was to work backwards, unpicking and testing all previous repairs. I then reconnected everything properly, using soldered joints, proper connectors, and adequate insulation.

Fault codes were only present on Bank 2, so I decided to replace both Camshaft Position Sensors and both Variable Timing Solenoids on that bank. I also installed new wiring and connectors to ensure reliability. For the Variable Timing Solenoids, I opted for the newer plastic design (LR045390) instead of the older metal versions. This updated design was purchased directly from Land Rover, as I assume the redesign was made to address known issues.

This process was time-consuming but necessary to eliminate wiring and component issues as potential culprits. At this point, the engine is running better, but further monitoring will confirm whether the problem is fully resolved.

After all components were installed, and every single break in the wiring or prior repair was corrected properly, the engine is now running silky smooth, even up to temperature—no knocking, no rattling—just very smooth operation. The P0018-00 (AE) fault code is now gone, so clearly, these repairs resolved a key issue.

However, I now have two intermittent fault codes: P0345-02 (AF) - Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 2) - General Failure Information: General Signal Failure and P0390-02 (AF) - Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit (Bank 2) - General Failure Information: General Signal Failure. Despite this, the GAP tool is showing signals from these sensors in the live data, which is confusing.

At this stage, it’s unclear where the issue lies - the sensors are all new - the wiring is good, so it must be some other aspect of the system or it is the timing chain....but can't see it. Further investigation is needed to determine the root cause of these intermittent fault codes.

I can clear the code and it remains gone for a while..... then and only on restart it pops up..... I am stumped!

Ran the ECU update/flash to version CH42-14C204-RTC - cycled the car a half dozen times and ran it to temp - no fault codes came up and did not go back into limp mode - yet live data still shows discrepancies - how can bank 1 and bank 2 be so out and it not throw up a fault code?

Any ideas out there ?

Last thing to test will be the wiring harness from the camshaft sensors right through to the ECU... while I have check, re-check and where needed fixed broken or badly repaired wiring to Bank 2.... I need to check the Solenoid-Camshaft profile switching-bank 2 cables to ECM... each camshaft sensor on bank 2 inlet and outlet share the same ground and voltage reference cables and with the P0345 and P0390 I am wondering if it might be one of these.... fact that it has intermittently worked could be down to a bad ground or short somewhere.... will test and maybe just run a complete new wire to each sensor and bypass the harness to eliminate as much as I can....failing that can't see it being anything other then an actual timing chain issue!!!!!!

I'd be interested to know if your chains were done using genuine LR parts or one of the cheap Chinese kits that you can buy. 🚗 Diagnostic Journey: The Saga of Bank 2 Camshaft Sensors 🛠️

After hours of painstaking electrical diagnostics and multiple tests, I pinpointed an issue with the ground quality to the Bank 2 camshaft sensors. The cable showed damage/pinch points, but no obvious breaks. Here’s the process I followed:

1️⃣ Grounding Overhaul: Added additional grounds from the battery to the chassis and the engine block—total overkill, but I wanted to eliminate any doubts.

2️⃣ Fresh Ground & Voltage Verification: Ran a new ground to the Bank 2 sensors, verified voltage, and ensured both output cables were sending clean signals.

3️⃣ Triple Check: Inspected and tested the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) cables until I was satisfied everything was functioning as it should.

🔧 Results:

Reset the car: No fault codes, no restrictive performance mode.
Engine ran up to temperature and through start-stop cycles over a dozen times.
48 hours later: Still no fault codes, and the engine is running well.
👀 Current Observations:
Live data shows slight discrepancies in the camshaft adaptation values. While they’re within the manufacturer’s ±3 tolerances, I’m keeping a close watch. Both Bank 2 VVT solenoids are new, and live data confirms timing adjustments are happening—just not always equally between the banks.

✅ What’s Ruled Out:

Oil: Brand new, with good flow and pressure.
Electricals: Ground and voltage verified.
🤔 Next Question:
Could the slight adaptation discrepancies be due to the Camshaft Phasers? Hard to say, but it's a possibility I’ll keep on the radar.

For now, the engine’s performing well, and I’ll keep monitoring live data closely. Fingers crossed this saga ends here, but you never know with these things!

A totally uneconomical project… however, it’s not really what it is all about. Next on the list is a full paint correction, DINITROL on the front and red sub frames....Install an Amazon Echo Auto device + Amazon Fire TV into the rear entertainment....

I know these rear screens are not even HD let alone 4k....but nice to have the Fire TV wired into the rear AV.... Amazon, Netflix, and Apple TV is a lot more pleasing to the kids than BBC News (the only TV channel I seem to be able to receive) and my early 2000's DVD collection of Friends and Csi......

I have never replaced brakes before; even though I have been working on my own cars for years, I kind of always thoughts that brakes were a thing to leave to the specialists... however; anyone contemplating saving some money and doing your brakes yourself, I would highly recommend it - I was amazed at how straight forward to was, I always was a little scared of out...

Other than a couple of snagging issues the Copart rescue is pretty much complete now.... I won the car at Copart on 25th September - two and a half months from pretty much a wreck to what will be a wonderful daily driver for me for a good few years ahead.....Do I regret it? Put simply no; while I could have bought one for a lot less than it has cost me to sort this one; like I had before when I saved my 2011 L322 4.4 TDV8, you can't really put a price on that feeling of accomplishment from taking a car from what was a dead wreck, back to life........and when that re-born wreck has a Supercharged 5.0 V8; how can you not just smile ear to ear while your wife shouts at you from he passenger seat to slow down............ thanks for all the comments and help from various other members... really appreciated !
