Just had my renewal through from Darwin, up from £711 to £952 - up 33%. No changes, apart from me being a year older (75), the car too at 7.5yrs.

The premium on my other car (Qashqai) came down at renewal last month, so I was (stupidly) hoping for a reduction on last year's premium on the RR.

A quick trawl through the comparison sites and eSure are coming up the cheapest at £669, but I won't be buying from them. All of the others are coming close to Darwin's renewal, but with higher excesses (£1250 vs £800) 2017 SDV8 Autobiography

Why would you not use eSure if they are more competitive on the assumption you have obtained a quote on the same terms as your renewal?

I think its fairly standard behaviour for an insurer to penalise people for not shopping around with year on year increases and auto-renewal etc etc. I tend to go with the cheapest as in reality I have not claimed on a policy for over 25 years so the savings add up.

How many years no claims do you have?

Reason for boycotting eSure: It's a bit of a long story, but seeing that you've asked!

A couple of years ago a client of eSure falsely reported that my Qashqai was involved in a collision with them. It was completely untrue, I had never been to the location stated etc. I'm sure that it was a case of my plate being misread with no other sinister intentions.

Because eSure notified my insurers about this my insurer contacted me to provide more information. I responded immediately and provided photos of my undamaged car, agreed that if they wished they could arrange for my car to be inspected and stated that I would be prepared to defend the matter in court if necessary. Never heard anything further.

Six months later my insurance came up for renewal, I didn't like the figure that my insurer quoted so I went down the route of the comparison sites and obtained a cheaper quote. I purchased the renewal from another company. Several days later I received an email from the new insurer saying that on the proposal I had declared that I hadn't made any claims, but they had discovered on the CUE database that a claim and a loss had been recorded against me and that they wanted an additional £150 premium. Of course this was to do with the false claim from eSure and their client. I was advised that the only way to rectify this is for me to contact my existing insurer and get them to remove it from the CUE.

I did this and they refused to remove it on the basis that they have to give eSure six months to respond to their last communication with them and as they hadn't heard anything back from them the entry on the CUE had to remain for an additional 2 months. In May 2023 they had requested eSure to either provide them with evidence that my car was involved or drop the allegation, this was now September 2023, there still hadn't been any reply from eSure and they had to give them until November 2023 for eSure to respond.

I attempted to contact eSure to hasten their response. This was an impossible task, the b*stards wouldn't answer the phone, didn't respond to emails or old fashioned Royal mail sent to their CEO.

November came and went and my insurer had still not heard anything from eSure so they finally removed it from the CUE.

I did re-insure that year with my existing insurer, despite being angry with them too. They lodged data on the CUE that they had made a loss, but they hadn't, no payout was made. Their renewal premium was lower than the other quote after the other firm wanted the extra £150.

It's very likely that eSure haven't behaved differently from any other insurance company, but the taste left in my mouth after this sh*t show means that I will never be a client of theirs!

Terrible story and given the pain you've gone through I understand your reticence to use them in the future.

Given the quite large gap between their cheapest quote and the renewal you've had there must be some other options?

The reason I asked about the NCB history is that, like you, I haven't claimed on my insurance for so long its easily over 25 years, and fingers crossed and touch wood etc, do not intend to.

Insurance is a murky business these days I think, when I was younger there would be a significant discount for people choosing third party options, not anymore, its virtually the same cost. I understand that insurance is all about risk, but it doesn't feel like it when they have a customer who is proven to be "reliable" but elect to treat them as one of the crowd from a pricing point of view.

I guess the problem we all have is that you don't really know how good your insurance truly is until you need it.

There are some other quotes between eSure and Darwin (who, by the way don't feature in the results of the comparison sites), but some, if not all are eSure 'in disguise', such as Sheilas Wheels and they have higher excesses than Darwin.

Something needs to be done about insurance, although I doubt that it ever will.

It's incomprehensible that we're told that the main reason for Land Rover premiums rocketing is theft, but when we ask for a Third Party Only quote the premiums are either the same or higher than fully comp. Clearly, we're being gouged.

Just to lighten the tone, I got an email saying that my insurance rang out on 1st November or at least thats how I read it. So I took out a new policy and then realised that my insurance doesn't need renewing until next year they were happy to cancel but charged me 35 quid for being so stupid.  Geoff

Somethings happening with insurance......or it is for us.

I've just renewed my 911 and it is sub £500 for the first time in a few years, the Mrs has just had her renewal through for her evoque and I can't get a better price anywhere. I was expecting her's to be over £1k easy butthey've quoted just over £700.

Hope the downward trend continues for when my SVR is due. Current

I’ve had the same experience and it really does feel like you’re having your pants pulled down when it’s the same provider.

I know that people who work in this industry would find plenty of reasons and/or examples of why these sorts of things happen but as a consumer it feels really crappy.

It’s never easy to make comparisons between individuals but on the assumption most people in here are of a more “mature” demographic and therefore tend to have better risk profiles it’s mad to see members with quotes in the thousands, especially for older L322’s.

A broker once told me that whilst 3rd party used to be a cheap option it is now view by the robbing b.stud insurers that it means you don't car about your own car and will be a higher risk!!! 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

So as I was with Adrian Flux a couple of years ago they emailed me to offer a quote. The chap told me he had an excellent quote for me £2900 plus £1450 excess .
I with Admiral and have just got there quote £905 including my home insurance.

Ok so this might be risking being a bit dumb in a “bank of dave” type way but …………. What’s stopping someone starting their own insurance company / broker who ONLY covers Land Rover products (maybe exclude the sports ) and leaning towards those if a more mature outlook with large no claims??

So if you had a group of highly motivated people like that what would be the barrier to doing it given that most policies are underwritten by the same few large firms.

I’ve just run a couple of quotes through as mine is due end of Jan.

Last year best was Admirl at £1100.

This year Best so far is Hastings at £690.

Interestingly I ran a quote for a 70 plate D350 best was IRO £1k but a 72 plate 460 was £800???

Having done a few renewals in the last couple of months there is definitely a downward trend. My D4 has come down 25-30% so did our Kia.


Edit….. Just been having another play with the meerkats. £673 on Hastings if my renewal was in 3 weeks, but if I’m quoting 4 weeks in advance it increases by £200….. with the same provider! So 3 weeks in advance seems to be the sweet spot. 👍🏻 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
