There is no reverse light function on the 12N socket you have to use the 12S socket, the grey one. Pin 1 plus earth on Pin 3. Smile

This is the socket layout from the rear of the car

Usually the numbers are printed under the flap on the socket

Living in an area without street lights I decided to do something about the woefully inadequate reverse lights on my car.
This is my solution, just in time for the darker nights. I appreciate it my not suit everyone but at least I can now see where I'm going when in reverse. The lights are led based and are very bright, four 3W leds in each aluminuim housing.
The lights could probably be wired directly into the reverse light circuit due to their low power but I chose instead to feed them thro two relays in order that they only light when reverse is selected in combination with the sidelights being on.
ie the original reverse lights on the car operate only in daylight and in the dark all 4 lights come on.
To make a tidier install I purpose made two galv steel strip brackets as shown to bolt the lights to, such that when they are bolted to the rear plastic skirt of the car all mounting brackets are hidden with only the body of the lamp housings showing.
The power for the lights is taken from unused Fuse 1 of the rear fuse board using a plug-in piggy back connector with the two individual relays switched by tapping into the reverse light and sidelight circuits respectively.

Yes you could wire a feed from the tow bar electrics, either plugging into the socket or tapping into the cables inside the boot.
The lights would then be on anytime you selected reverse, even in daylight.

Wonder if some of the thin linear DRL fittings you see on Fleabay would mount alongside the standard reverse lamps?
For example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-8-WHITE-LED-H...4d026c9662
Should make the wiring very simple too?
Had it, loved it!
