What’s the odds getting the gearbox out of P if I disconnect the battery for a few minutes? It’s now stuck

Yes. Can see the brake light shine too…. So the switch is ok, if it’s the same switch, and not a separte one for the box?

I understand its a costly part to change - yippiiii - just bought and changed the rear diff… That wasn’t cheap either

… I’m starting to miss my D3…. Nearly faultless during 5 years ownership compared to the two month old (to me) L405…

A quick update. The P lock issue is solved with some gaffa tape The solution nicked from YouTube… But, a tip for the other ones that have, or will have, the same problem: Follow the workshop manual to dismantle the gear selector unit, and not the one that you find on YouTube (the guy loosens the whole centre console, pulls it backwards and access the gear selector uniot from the front.). That´s a way to complicated way to do it! It´s supposed to be accessed/opened from the rear, leaving the console where it is!

Funnily enough mine did this the other day with my wife. She claimed not to have tried to turn the selector before it rose up fully but I don’t know

Anyways, I ended up repeatedly pressing the brake pedal on and off, and thumping the area just behind the selector a few times. The solenoid loosened and began working again. I’ll monitor it. V8 or else ...

Speaking from experience do not leave this - get the selector changed, an intermittent fault soon turns into a permanent one and it will definitely leave you stranded - most likely in a very inconvenient or dangerous place - doing a U turn, in a road for example or in a car park leaving you stranded in the middle of the road blocking it and causing a huge amount of stress to not only you but other drivers being also blocked in.

I’ve had 2 fail in 2 L405’s and the symptoms are always an intermittent fault, temporary lock out or a stiff selector turn especially after a long run. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

seems like the sensible thing might be for us all to purchase a spare and have in the workshop for that very day!!

£150 to £300 is a lot for a spare just to sit around. a roll of gaffer tape might be better value after all! V8 or else ...

So now, as well as worrying about: blocked DPFs, regens, snapping crankshafts, stuck EGR valves and various turbo problems I have to worry about it sticking in gear. Oh well, more sleepless nights till I find out where to put the gaffer tape. 😕

The roll of gaffer tape is for the irate mouths of the blocked-in carpark users, to shut them up?

My wife claimed it happened again. I get the in car, and it works perfectly.

I'm saying nothing.

As for the gaffer tape trick ( where you use it to hold the lock pin in its retracted position ). I was thinking that over time the tape would stretch and fail, and that a better solution might be a paper clip bent to shape to hook around and hold it back all the time.

Quick question .... is the locking pin only to prevent gear selection when in the P position ?

Cause I tried it today creeping along in D and didn't need to have the brake pressed to knock it into N and back to D again. V8 or else ...
