ZF8 oil and filter change

Hi all. Just changed filter pan and oil, all without issue and used GAP iid to check temperature etc. car was on ramps and pretty level. However, 4 litres of oil came out, but slightly less than 3 went back in. I cycled through the gears etc as instructed. Any one have a clue as to what’s going on? Don’t think it was overfilled as I understand oil drains from an overflow at running temperatures. Went for a short trip on completion and seems to work ok. Thanks. Chris

Did you have the engine ticking over while you checked the fluid level?

Hi Phil. No, I turned it off after I’d got it up to temp and then removed the fill plug. I got another half litre in at that point, but total less than 3 litres. Do you think that would make much difference, i.e. another litre? Thanks

I think you’re right Phil. I’ve re-read the instructions and missed the bit where it says keep the engine running! Thanks for your suggestion-spot on.

The reason it’s important is because, the moment you turn the engine off, the transmission oil pump stops and the torque converter starts to drain down into the sump. This produces an artificially high fluid level, preventing you from putting in the correct amount of fluid before it overflows from the filler hole.
