Smell and smoke when hot

Hi all,
My 4.4TDV6 has started smelling of burning (oil?) after about 15 miles, and sometimes (getting more regular) has smoke coming up from the oil filter area!
There are no signs of oil leaks anywhere, and no signs of oil on the exhaust system.
I did recently have the change the MAP sensor as it was totally blocked with "gunge"!
I have had one EGR code that wont clear, but performance is perfectly normal.
I`m guessing its somehow burning gunge out of the manifold?
All input massively appreciated before i start ripping it apart!
Cheers
Roy

Could be the oil cooler leaking or the turbo oil feed leaking these are all part of the oil filter housing.
what is the EGR code, the exhaust inlet from the crossover pipe is to the rear right of the oil filter 1972 Series 3 full of character

An initial minor leak from the oil cooler or turbo oil feed pipe first gets onto the cross-over pipe yet doesn't show as an oil leak from underneath. Removing the cabin air intake will allow a good view of the area. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims
