Cut the template between each letter then place over existing letters before removing them. Tape template back together in new spacing- hey presto, perfect spacing. Current:

Find a friendly l405 owner and do a 'rubbing' of their lettering and then use that as a template. ... - .- -.

I can imagine the scene, walking up to a RR and asking if you can take a rubbing of their rear lettering! |

So I removed the badges and the sticky glue/tape and spent about 30mins buffing the panel to remove all trace of the old letters.
