Facelift seat base replacement foam

My ongoing quest for perfection now turns towards the driver’s side seat base. There’s an indentation half way along the outer edge of the seat squab - presumably where the previous owners’ upper legs have indented the foam whilst getting out.

I’d like to replace the foam underneath the leather, but can’t seem to identify what’s required from various parts diagrams.

Has anyone replaced this seat foam and can point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

This is on my to do list as well as the seats on the 5.0 aren't as good as the 26,000 mile seats on our 4.4 TDV8.

I’ve done this job a few times and was well worth doing + not massively difficult.

A few pointers -

The seat base foam part will depend on the year and whether the seats are heated only or heated and cooled. The latter have an additional pad stuck to the base foam which includes ducting for the air from the peltier unit. If you have this type, I’d buy both parts as detaching it from the old foam base is tricky without destroying it, plus it’s usually deformed beyond use anyway.

I’d suggest speaking with Duckworth LR who will be able to confirm the exact foam parts you need for your model from your VIN and will usually offer a discount if you mention the forum. You’ll also need the replacement hog rings to attach the cover to the new foam (some have used zip ties but personally I’d use the proper hog rings).

Remove the seat from the car - it can be done in-situ but much more of a ball ache accessing everything and it’s pretty straightforward to remove if you take care manoeuvring it out.

Disconnect the battery (after adjusting the seat to remove the four large torx head mounting bolts) to avoid the airbag error light or don’t worry if you have an IID to reset it anyway.

Buy some decent metal snips & hog ring pliers - the leather cover is secured to wires moulded into the seat base foam with metal hog rings, these need to be cut off to remove and re-attached to pull the leather cover securely back onto the new foam.

If you’re methodical, it should take a morning or afternoon at most to do.

Any questions, please shout.

Many thanks Jonathan

My plan is to do the driver’s side then swap the seats over. I’ve discovered some very interesting nteresting stuff called masking gel which you apply over the contrast stitching and then recolour the seats. Peeling away the masking gel leaves untouched stitching. Simple but genius.

I’ve done a full interior recover on an L320 so pretty familiar with the hog rings etc. I actually used zip ties and like them as it allows you to increase the tension on the cover and easy enough to snip if you need to release the tension.

Good call re talking to Duckworths - I’ll give them a shout.

Cheers

Jonny
