I am dealing with a weird TDV8 ticking/tapping rhytmic noise on idle that appears with warm engine and it goes faster as I increase engine speed, above 1400-1500rpm it is not noticable. With cold engine there is no noise and it slowly starts to go louder as the engine warms up.

I rebuilt my SDV8 last year after a spun big end bearing, that sounds like it could be chain slap due to either a bad oil pump or tensioner, although you would not expect it if a new short block, chains and tensioners have been installed. Were they genuine JLR items?

Was it a new shortblock from JLR, as my understanding was none were in production until late November 2024 as I documented in my other post. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division. |

Here is the invoice from dealership. Can't really remember when it was delivered, maybe it was 10.2024 |

No mention of an oil pump and also no head gaskets, not sure how you would replace a block with using head gaskets? That was a very good price for a genuine shortblock, I paid just under £5k with discount in December 24 and see they are now just under £10k.

The head gaskets were ordered separately and also the chain, tensioners and chain guides. I already ordered new OE chain tensioners, the passenger side tensioner arrived already and we replaced it - no luck, noise the same. Now in few days should arrive the driver´s side tensioner. I will give this a try.

Was any warranty offered by the JLR main dealer on the rebuild as all parts have 24 months warranty?

The engine rebuild itself was done by a independant mechanic and racecar engineer, but unfortunately he passed away. |

Sorry to hear that. Maybe try the remaining tensioner and then if no change, rig up a oil pressure gauge to see if the pump is within spec before changing it. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division. |

You can remove the oil pressure switch on the front of the left hand head and connect it there, shouldn't need to remove the vacuum pump.

Thanks, if it´s that simple I will measure the oil pressure meanwhile I am waiting for the other tensioner to arrive. |

Hey, Have you solved the problem? We have exactly the same sound, but our range rover 2018 is 3.0 SDV6, on these models with 3.0 engine are timing belt, we had changed timing belt kit, but no luck, the same thing, our mechanic says it could be timing chanes or tensioners on camshafts. When it’s cold now sounds only when it gets hot, 4000 km had driven with this issue. Everything started after installing new second hand engine with 70000km
