Rear driveshaft popped out

Last week left the fatty at the garage for engine mounts replacement, sump plug helicoil repair, rear hub bushings and a few more things. Yesterday morning picked the car up and continued to my work. On my way home, while passing near walls, a scraping noise could be heard from the rear right but only briefly; it was then gone so I didn't think much about it.
This morning drove to work again and the scraping noise was again being heard at medium speeds. On my way home again, made a couple shopping stops and a heavy, oily smell struck me. Again, not thinking it could be my car, I didn't think much of it until the second stop; that smell couldn't be everywhere I went unless...

I am pretty sure someone gave the driveshaft a good tug or a few blows with the hammer on the hub while replacing those rear bushes. Now remains to see if the diff is done and judging from the scraping noise, the loss of oil and having driven some 200km with it, well, nothing good is to be expected i'm afraid and I doubt anyone will assume responsibility Big Cry

Nothing to lose but to shove it back into the diff. Seriously.

It's possible they pulled the top of the hub outwards too far to access the top bush, and cause the shaft is attached to the hub, that may have pulled the driveshaft outwards releasing it at the diff side. ( At the diff side, it's only held in moderately by a circlip which is designed to release with enough force. )

The odd noise your hearing may be things like the CV joints binding under certain suspension angles because at the moment the shaft is possible too short to allow play and movement as the suspension articulates. Refitting it back into the diff will extend it back out to its normal length and allow the designed movement / play in the CV joints.

Tap it back in till it's home and see how you go. Oh, and put some oil back in too. Rolling with laughter V8 or else ...

The inner cv joint is indeed squeezed as the boot seems significantly compressed compared to the left side. I could try hammering the axle back in but I'd rather try to have them (the garage) make right as it certainly seems to be their doing, which I'm not at all certain they'll be taking ownership of. If I touched it myself, then they'll be literally washing their hands...So I'm having her sent over on a tow truck first thing in the morning, hoping for the best.

To their credit, the garage fully acknowledged responsibility and repaired the damage at no cost. It is literally the first time ever that a garage assumes responsibility for something like that in my neck of the woods, and I'm really thankful and appreciative of their way of handling matters.
They had to replace the retainer circlip which was broken and that required some special tool which they had to order for and that's why they couldn't finish it before this afternoon. Fluid loss was about 1/4 so they topped up after their inspection which also means that the diff wasn't fried. Much relieved by this outcome.

That’s a decent result. It should be fine long term. V8 or else ...

And, as if the recent cockup wasn't enough, I had to send her in again. For a pierced CV boot this time. Rather suspiciously it was the front left inner cv joint which happens to be right beneath the engine mount, which was only recently replaced. The rubber had not deteriorated or cracked, it was a damned hole! I had the axle rebooted both ends for EUR 180 though I'm beginning to think I had better booted someone's Censored for good measure.
