Switzerland 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Java Black
2007 tdv8 3.6 with bird chirping sound under load

Hi all,

I just bought a 2007 model Range Rover L322 TDV8 3.6 Vogue with 240,000 km on the clock. According to the seller, the only issue was a minor battery drain... that turned out to be a lie.

After 100km, I’ve started hearing a very strange noise — it sounds like a bird chirping or twittering. It only happens when the car is under load going uphill or when I’m hard on the throttle.

I'm not sure what it is — my guess is a boost leak or, more likely, an exhaust manifold/header leak. I’ve recorded a short video of the sound https://youtube.com/shorts/8tPW3vFjnP8?feature=share. Has anyone here experienced the same issue or can point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

For anyone getting the same noise, this turned out to be a warped exhaust manifold on bank A (warped 0.5 mm cylinder 1-3 seems straight, leaking mainly on cylinder 4 and maybe a little on 1 but there was also a leaking injector return pipe just above, so the discoloration may be from that). No broken strut bolts. The repair isn’t that hard—just really cramped. Without a lift, it’s probably not a fun job to do. Parts are relatively cheap (I got a new manifold for €130, plus €50–70 for gaskets, new bolts/nuts, etc.).

A few tips:
The shop manual in the wiki explains the repair very well, and I followed that—except I also removed the right air strut to get a bit more room through the wheel well side wall.

When removing the turbo VGT connector, press on the small tab (Impossible to see when turbo is in the car) behind the connector and pull. I had to use screwdriver and work the connector out slowly...

Be very careful when removing the manifold strut bolts. One broke, but luckily enough thread was left that I could get two nuts on to extract it. Heating the area with a heat gun helped losing the strut bolts.

A Topdon ArtiDiag 800BT is capable of performing all the necessary/recommended air suspension depressurizing/pressurizing/leveling functions. Used to be cheap (Paid 180USD a few years ago) with lifetime updates. Great tool for a DIY (Used it on Porsche,BMW,Mercedes,Toyota,Range rover and it can do 99% of what I will ever do).
