Although manufacturers have consistently tried to extend the time, many have caught a cold as something unexpected happens and bites back on warranty claims. They also consider the "lifetime" of a car which is most often taken to be 10 years or 100k miles. If something will probably last that long it will be deemed a non service item and "sealed for life". But ignoring all that tosh and doing regular fluid/filter changes at least annually will see cars lasting 250k miles or more. Of course if you're only keeping the thing a couple of years there's a strong financial incentive not to bother and let the next owner deal with the consequences. Does nothing for your social conscience/responsibility, but definitely cheaper.
