Secondary Turbo Replacement - new question

Just been told the reason for my restricted performance warning and smell of oil is the secondary turbo. It needs replacing as the oil seal is failing and something else I can't remember.

I was convinced my turbos were fine as car accelerates smoothly beyond 2750 rpm, never any smoke, oil usage or noises. If I accelerate beyond 2750 and keep the revs high the restricted warning sometimes appears. It always Clears easily.

I replaced the Map and Maf sensors with genuine items and checked the doughnuts all of which were OK.

I am impressed with the specialist who has the car so am not questioning their findings.

The cost is £3700 which includes £2600 for the turbo itself and the remainder being 5 hours labour and associated parts.

My car has 96000 miles, is immaculate and gets fresh oil and filter every 2 to 3000 miles and genuine fuel and air filters more frequently than LR recomend.

I can find a Garret turbo brand new from a known supplier for £1600 Inc VAT. It's not LR branded but made by the same company. Is this the best option or is there somewhere anyone can recomend for turbo supply?

The car is likely worth circa £8k so spending almost 50% on a turbo replacement really hurts.

£2,600 to me sounds as a bend-over and dry-hump price. Was he wearing a mask?

As you say, it's made by Garrett and not Cartier. 2012 Vogue TDV8 in Aintree green over sand

Have you done a smoke test ? the 4 rubber pipes (2 each side of the plenum) are notorious for causing restricted performance. A lot of peeps replace them with silicone.

2012 MY will already have the latest silicone versions but it is a possibility. I am not sure the symptom is smell of oil as described though 2012 Vogue TDV8 in Aintree green over sand

I checked the 4 rubber hoses as they are either tge original ones or genuine replacements, all good.

I thought my slight oil smell must be the oil cooler and/or the 2 little O rings, also all good.

They fully checked the car as requested and settled on the secondary turbo failing.

I think their quote of 5 hours labour to be fair and the sundries list looks what I would expect.

The biggest cost is the turbo hence wondering what others would suggest, ie alternative brand/supplier/refurb???

Autodoc is £1,257 plus £131.23 surcharge for the old unit (refundable on return). To confirm this is the left turbo?

At this price it will be remanufactured and it would need double-checking as Autodoc sometimes messes up its part numbers. 2012 Vogue TDV8 in Aintree green over sand

Yes it's the left turbo as you look out from the drivers seat.

Will have a look at Autodoc, thanks 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Following a read on here I had a look at the cross over valve that sits down below the radiator. I have the later non nut version.

I added some high quality lubricant, left to soak in and just went for a drive. I drive her quite hard accelerating to 4k revs and holding as gears changed. I also accelerated to 3k multiple times keeping my foot down as she changed gears.

This would nearly always result in the restricted performance red triangle.

Despite trying to get the car to go into restricted performance she behaved perfectly. No noise, no smoke and no hesitation or anything untoward.

If my turbo was at the stage it needed replacement would this be possible?

I am left wondering if it was just something sticking as it leads quite a gentle life. I don't want to destroy my engine though so am a little worried. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

There's a turbo specialist in the midlands that claim they rebuild the turbos for Land Rover. A friend of mine spoke to them recently and they were under 700 quid to rebuild one and that came with a 2 year warranty.

I might be wrong but I think they were called Turbo Technics.
