Car appears to be leaning to one side…????!?

Hi all,

Following on from my previous post…, I’m still no closer to understanding why my L405 appears to be leaning to the right very slightly when viewed from behind…

The suspension looks perfectly fine..

I took it to a LR specialist who confirmed the distance between the centre of the wheel to the top of the wheel arch was approximately 1 cm less than it should be.. He then recalibrated the system.. When I got home, it had gone back to the way it was…?!?

Yesterday I changed the height sensor in that corner, which has made precisely no difference what so ever….

Had anyone got any other ideas of what this issue might be..?

Is it parked on perfectly flat ground ?

Slightly uneven ground at the front will have a big visual effect on how it sits at the back. V8 or else ...

Mine (L322) did this, I became quite obsessive over it. For context the rear CVD shocks were Bilstein and brand new.

A full suspension recalibration via the GAP tool sorted it. My mechanics whizzy tool couldnt do it, or could but the process was too technical. With GAP it was easy, especially with two people. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

My mechanic reset it originally using a gap tool. It went back to lop sided straight afterwards… I’m getting quite obsessive about it as well… Neutral

Off the top of my head, things that could make a car lean when parked up:

1 - Dampers stuck / stiff ... so its binding and preventing small, smooth suspension movement and so it gets stuck on a lean. Rare, but it happened to my active dampers on an old evoque. Could test by seeing if the car rocks smoothly when pushed side to side to make it lean back and forth. If its not smooth, or you hear dunts and little clunks as though friction is building up and releasing, then it could be that.

2 - The active cornering system (ACE) ... it uses hydraulics to push on the anti-roll bar links to counter leaning on cornering, so it easily has enough force to make the car lean if it wanted to. That said, when parked up at rest, the system should become unlocked and it doesn't place any force on the suspension. So unlikely to be this unless something is really wrong with it.

3 - The height sensors. Are they *all* fixed in position correctly ? Is the *any* looseness to any of the mounting points, the arms and the little ball joints. Even the slightest shoogle / play in these will create a variation in the height signal sent to the ECU. So you take it to the garage, reset it, all is well. Then drive it home, and the bumps of the road have moved the sensor / arm slightly from its reset position ... car tries to re-level, and its out of whack cause the sensor or arm is in a different position from before. V8 or else ...
