Another sdv8 4.4 failed due to turbo

Hi everyone in a situation where got a 4.4 65 plate and engine gone kaboom…hole in sump, Conrod shattered, probably crankshaft damaged but not sure, can see sleeve damage from piston and probably block gone. (Engine runaway)

So question is I’m guessing this ain’t really repairable, rebuild out of the question I reckon or do people think it could be?

2nd is it better to get a second hand engine with recon turbos? And take my chances.

What’s people opinions

Thanks bill

Engine failure due to a runaway engine running on its own oil is caused by a faulty turbo / turbo issue.

This is not an engine fault. It can and does happen with any Turbo engine - including cars, trucks, tractors and excavators. It is especially common on older engines where the turbo is worn and this results in the seals failing.

The solution is to check the turbine bearing float on older higher mileage cars and especially where they have skipped oil services. 99% of the time it’s missed services that cause this.

It’s not just RR this happens to.

And yes to the OP 99% that block is irreparable. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Yeah I’m starting to see a lot of sdv 8 going bad rather than the tdv8 but I’m guessing that’s due to no dpf???

As you are correct vogue defo had runaway so need both turbos as not sure which one went bad so have to get the both but if engine is out it’ll be so much easier.

Now seeing as my engine is gone I don’t think it can be rebuilt? So looking for a new/used engine what’s your opinions???
Or get one of the companies on eBay to repair/replace.

I have get a quote for qp online they reckon 9k plus then turbos on top.
Can one recommend in Essex?

For goodness sake be very, very, careful of some of the rebuilders - a friend had a V6 diesel go due to crankshaft failure - he went to a well advertised “rebuilders” in Lancashire they gave him a fixed price of £7k which was accepted.

The car was delivered to them, 2 months went by (friend was in hospital having cancer treatment), he called them as he had heard nothing. They claimed they hadn’t got his car - he told them he would turn up at their workshop with the police. 10 minutes later he received a call advising they had found the vehicle at the back of their yard and would start work on it.

Several days later he gets a call - advised him the price was now £12k as they had found more wrong with it.

That was then followed by a dispute, and their words were “tough if you don’t like it come and get it”. The vehicle was in bits ! He had no choice now as he was over a barrel with them.

An agreement was reached at £11k and when he collected the vehicle they insisted on a cash payment otherwise they wouldn’t release the vehicle - then as he drove out of the yard one of the mechanics came over tapped on the window, laughed at him
And said “good luck”. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Of no help to the op now, but I made a device for my 4.4 TDV8 to close the EGR butterfly for a while whenever the ignition was switched off so that switching off would kill a runaway caused by the primary turbo. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims

Any diesel engined vehicle working in an oil refinery or a gas plant has to have a Chalwyn valve fitted to the air intake. This device is set to close and block the air if it reaches a flow rate greater than the normal full throttle value.
Surprising that manufacturers don't use something similar. They're not very expensive.

Slicing open the throttle body intake hose works if it can be done soon enough, or just squeezing the hose closed with multi-grips as I did to a TD5. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims

You guys have got me all nervous now..... Confused

How quick is quick enough ?

Is it something that would likely happen at idle, or whilst travelling, potentially at speed ?

I can see me doing rag stuffing drills Laughing

Be very aware that a lot of bottom end parts for the 4.4 are not available and aftermarket are dubious to say the least. Feel for you, you are not alone facing this issue! L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

I suppose you could do your bit for the environment by not creating all that smoke though....

Not necessarily, as mostly the damage is done when the sump runs out of oil. They will normally sit there and rev making lots of smoke and noise but choked to a degree by the excessive oil. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims
