Is BCM cooked or can it be recalibrated?

DTC (read with GAP IID Tool):
U201B-54 (2F) Control module calibration data 2 — System programming failure — missing calibration
(logged on 03-07-2025 13:33:13 at 154,790 km)
Symptoms:

Steering column not motorised at all — no movement via memory seat recall or via the manual column switch.
Live Data recognises switch requests, but hall sensors are either showing as N/A or reading out-of-range. I suspect this is why the BCM is reporting a calibration issue.
During the investigation, I also found evidence of a previous repair or intervention — someone had clearly messed with the wiring at connector C0587 (rear of the Battery Central Junction Box / BCM).
The wires had been badly bodged, in addition, most were melted together.

I had to sort out the loom first before any further diagnostics could be carried out. That alone took a good few hours to tidy up.

At least now I am confident there are no shorts, and the wires are connected properly — or as best as possible within a connector that looked as if it had been opened with a chisel and sledgehammer.



I have to admit: I then did something which probably shouldn’t be attempted — I installed a BCM from a donor vehicle to test the column and harness, and to check if it would make any difference. At that point I nearly caused problems with the KVM, since the replacement BCM was not programmed to this VIN. That said, with the donor BCM fitted, the steering column worked, meaning I was able to operate it via the switch.

To get the vehicle to recognise the keys again, I had to reset the KVM. Pulling fuse P17 from the glovebox fusebox (BCM) didn’t work, so I disconnected the battery and bridged positive to ground (with the battery fully disconnected!). That reset things, and the keys were recognised — the car started fine.

Unfortunately, after reinstalling the original BCM, the steering column is still non-functional.

Question:
Has anyone seen this DTC (U201B-54) before, or had steering column adjustment issues traced back to the BCM? _________________________________________________________________________

Some updates based on further diagnostics:

As previously mentioned, the hall sensors consistently return either no values or show max limits — even when the column is manually moved away from its mechanical end stops. This strongly supports the theory that the BCM cannot properly "see" the column position, likely triggering the U201B-54 DTC (missing calibration).

Important Discovery:
What I originally thought was a KVM/key recognition issue when swapping BCMs (e.g., "Smart Key Not Detected" message and car completely dead) actually isn't related to the KVM.

After digging into the DTCs and CAN activity, I’ve found this symptom points to a corruption or failure of the Medium-Speed CAN bus.

When the medium-speed CAN is interrupted or compromised:

Nothing comes online — no radio, climate control, instrument cluster, stalks, or central locking.
Basically, all mid-speed CAN modules drop out.
This makes the car appear totally unresponsive.
Current Diagnostic Hypotheses:
I’m now looking at two likely causes:
1. Interference or disruption from another module on the Medium-Speed CAN
Possibly a module pulling the bus down, sending noise, or shorting comm lines.
2. Internal BCM fault
The BCM itself may be faulty and disrupting the bus or unable to manage it after calibration loss or internal corruption.
Next Steps:
I need to find someone with Land Rover SDD to attempt a proper steering column calibration using the original BCM.
If this works, I’ll continue using the original BCM to see if issues return.
If not, I’ll pursue cloning the original BCM into the donor unit (which does operate the column).

If anyone has encountered similar BCM issues or mid-speed CAN disruptions, I’d really appreciate hearing your experience — it might help steer in the right direction... _________________________________________________________________________
