Road testing 4.4 L405

When road testing with the view to buying, how do you go about testing the turbos, what's the best way of getting them to show up any faults ? Thanks

As above really. The 1st turbo works in the lower rev range, so it should be smooth for your normal driving and give you a moderate pull away.

Second turbo only really kicks in as you approach and pass 3000rpm, so a decent way is to put the foot down from a fairly slow speed and get it up to motorway speed. A decent slip road would do this. A common sign of a turbo issue when doing this may be smoke from the exhaust. the bigger second turbo isn't always used, so it can potentially build up a wee bit of oil in it which will smoke slightly and clear on the first pull-away, be should be fine after that. if its smoking each time, then potentially an issue.

To me the feel of the full boost of the big turbo doesn't really kick in till it changes up a gear, so you really need to get it above 3k and hold it there until it up-shifts at least once ... you'll rapidly reach silly speeds by keeping the foot planted, so be mindful. V8 or else ...

the second turbo kicks in at around 2500 rpm..at that point if theres any oil in the rear 'v' section of the engine where the oil cooler is then it will start smoking... ... - .- -.

For the record, the primary turbo is the bigger one and the secondary the fill-in. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims
