Scary Mileage?

Hi all

As you may know im looking for a L322 Diesel.. Provided you have good history, what mileage would you guys be happy to pay £8k-£10k on? I appreciate they go on for miles (my old P38's had 180k on with little issues)
Everything i see is around the 100k-120k miles mark with good history. Doesnt that scare anyone Shocked ? Theres quite a few out there for £8-£10k with 165+ thousand on too!Or are we confident that the L322 D is good for a journey to the moon and back if looked after before the big bits start falling off!!!

Thanks again

To my mind, the diesel BMW unit is the most reliable unit fitted to the L322. They are well proven across the BMW models as well, though thankfully it doesn't have the dreaded swirl flaps fitted in the rr. Main reason I chose it over a petrol. Less to go wrong - some may argue, prob whilst leaning against a petrol pump.

Mines at 126k and uses no oil or water.

Those working on them on a daily basis will know more.......

TD6 is very reliable but the GM box is more likely to need a rebuild post 120k.

It is not the engine that is the problem. Worry more about the rest of the running gear:

Gearbox
Air Suspension inc struts, bags, compressor, reservoir, sensors
All bushes front and rear suspension (inc subframe bushes)
Brake Calipers
Steering rack
Hub bearings

Probably in that order too. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Big mileage doesn't necessarilly equate to unreliability, lack of maintenance does Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Re: Scary Mileage?

I've only had my '03 L322 for 4 months and clocked up 5,000 odd miles in her to date...but I must add I drive the living daylights out of it..both on its own and with a trailer. The BMW M57 is an excellent unit and good for hundreds of thousands of miles. The GM transmission is actually pretty decent....it's the torque converter that isn't man enough for the job. The air suspension, calipers, suspension bushes, electronics etc are wear and tear items....no better or worse than any other German car I ever owned. I actually rate these cars as pretty tough...but it is important to have a good independent workshop who these cars inside out and can keep them performing without charging the heart out of you. 2008 Range Rover TDV8 435,000kms

They are solid cars and as long as you look after them they will last you a lifetime.

Mine has done nearly 137k and is having its gearbox done for the 1st time. Engine is as smooth as when new. As long as you keep the oil changed and service the gearbox every 40k miles you should be easily able to hit the 200k and beyond. When buying at around the £10k level with a full history they are incredibly good value for money. Tom

Thanks guys for all the input.

Has kind of put any worries of 140-150k miles out of my mind as long as they come with good history.

Thank you!

Mine 2011 has 128,000 and still going strong. No issues at all, as long as the maintenance has been done thoroughly it should be fine. But suspension is a thing to worry about. Current Cars -

Sorry to butt in on someone else's thread: Is there a scary big service bill at any particular point? I know on th discovery there is a big service at 105k miles - is it the same on tdv8?

I haven't seen any posts on this so sorry if there are thousands and I have not looked properly!

^ Answering the above . . . yes & no !
All FF's upto I believe 2010 ( please correct if wrong ! ) have a BMW style service schedule.
In reality, this is on a cycle of : Oil / Inspection 1 / Oil / Inspection 2 and so on. So in theory, Inpection 2 is the big one but of course something pretty substantial may need replacement in between - ie suspension air bags & bushes. These are also service items in the real world . . .
There are other service jobs at time / mileage intervals eg coolant & gearbox (dependant on type), along with transfer and diff oils.
If you're asking the question it appears you value a service history. I've found routine service costs are not at all bad given the nature if the car. That being said I've always taken mine to an excellent independant and not a main dealer.
In summary, it's not the servicing that will catch you out, it's the unknown items - hope this helps

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?
