I'm leaving mine on.

Having said that, I've just remembered that I need my VIN for an upcoming workshop visit, so may remove it when I do that.

Then again, I may not.

As long as the disc and holder is perfectly aligned with the windscreen, I've always liked the look of them. Quaintly British. Another detail of our national identity gone. Crying or Very sad Si. <This is my name.

I'm the same age as Stan and have been conditioned by the years to view cars not displaying a current/valid tax disc as also unlikely to be insured, MOT'd and poorly maintained. Now all cars are going to appear that way starting with my own as my tax discexpired last night and, although the car's tax is renewed, I will not receive a replacement disc Big Cry

Just have to grin and bare it and hope to live long enough to wear off my years of tax disc conditioning Shocked Should've been old enough to know better...doh!

Laughing

I shall remove mine later when I venture outside.

Will be strange to not have it there.

As far as the other rule changes go, if you buy a car, the tax will not be transferred, so you will have to tax it yourself. That is for complete months, so if you buy a car on the 30th of a month, you will be paying for the entire month.

Likewise, If you sell a car, the DVLA will automatically reimburse you for the unused months, but again, only full months, so try not to sell at the start of a month.

There is some fuss on the net about this being a new money making scam as there will be cars taxed twice in the month it is sold to a new keeper. The authorities say the extra money made will be minimal. You make your own mind up......

You can now pay road tax monthly by direct debit also. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

The AA have only kicked up about this today, the day of implementation, and not taken the government to task about it previously Rolling Eyes

SMMT have the number of used cars sold in 2013 at 6,806,187.

Let's bias the average road tax to the lower end and say it's £100 a year (quite a lot of cars at £0 to offset the ones the top rates). If anyone has a better estimate or better data, chip in.

So they'll get (1/12) * 100 * 6806187 = £56.7 million a year.

Nice definition of "minimal". Censored

Martin, to be fair, isn't this always how road tax refunds and payments worked?

If, before today, I were to sell a car, I'd chop in the tax and get back any FULL months outstanding should I wish. The new owner would buy tax and pay up to the beginning of the month of purchase, therfore it has always been possible for a car to have been taxed twice in one month.

I don't see the new system being any different. It's just that it's now mandatory to do so without the ability to sell a car with tax and transfer it.

So I do challenge your figure. My reckoning makes it much lower. Si. <This is my name.

Yes - removed all mine. I have always thought the Range Rover looks a lot better without a Tax Disc Holder especially the big White Ones preferred by Land Rover Main Dealers.

I see your point, But previously, if the tax was left on it, you would not have to tax your newly purchased motor until it's actually due and the DVLA peeps would receive no additional monies.

From my experience, cars seem to be advertised as so many months of tax left etc. Can't remember the last time I surrendered tax back for a refund, but I must have at some point I'd imagine. Obviously the dealers on here will have a better picture of what tends to happen.

It's now more like a "Driving Licence" tax to me, as it's no longer attached to the car, but the owner. The tax does not stay with a car anymore, but effectively the registered keeper, who renews at car change. I know it's linked to the car on the databases etc, but you get my point....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
