Air Con System Pressure, What should it be?

Had the air con regassed last summer, worked perfectly. But this year it's back to being inoperative.

Got the IID Tool on it, shows the compressor clutch not engaging (Compressor Clutch - OFF) when air con switched on, but the clutch wheel turns when I rotate it.

The IID Tool shows the air con system pressure is at 5 Bar, so is this pressure correct or too low to get the clutch to engage? Have checked all fuses for the air con and they're okay, so wondering if there's a problem elsewhere in the system. I'm not too keen to just get the system vacced and regassed if there is some other fault.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Link makes sense to be honest Thumbs Up

Cheers Welshdragon, I can see what he's saying on the link about weight versus pressure, but at 5 Bar pressure that's 72.5 psi which is quite a high value. If there was a leak on the system, I'd expect a figure much lower, remember that car tyres are pumped up to between 2 and 3 bar maximum. Refrigerant is a gas after all, it only turns to a liquid when under pressure.

Let me know what pressure readings you get, that would be a great help in solving my problem. Thumbs Up

5 bar should kick in the compressor. Thats standing at about 20.0oc ambient.

Suction should go no lower than about 2.5 bar when running. as for the high side, I've seen them run at over 20bar, although there not supposed to.

2.5 bar is the point at which the saturated temperature of the gas will freeze moisture on the evaporator, give or take.

You'll find if it kicks in it will run and pump down to about a bar and then the car will shut it off on low pressure to protect it from freezing.

Its more than likely short on gas again.

I checked the pressure and my ff is showing between 14.168 to 16. 335 bar on tick over if that helps. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Cheers for the replies guys, looks like I may have a slow leak somewhere in the system. Will have to get it in to an air con specialist, rather than just get a re-gas at Halfords. Hey ho, that's life.

They insert a colourful die into the system and you will be able to see where the leak is.

I'm guessing that if you have 75 psi in teh system, you don't have a leak though?

I'm having problems with my air con

Took it to a garage that was doing a special offer for police. Chap tried to re-gas it and he tells me there is a leak. Stuck the UV dye in and told me that two pipes were leaking. I bought the pipes from Dan and fitted them this morning

Took it back and they tried again. They tell me it's still leaking. I've now got to have another leak test done which is p@ssin me off to be honest. I'm not convinced that the pipes I replaced were leaking. Can't really prove otherwise, that's the problem.

He did say he would do the 2nd leak test for free, so that's something 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded
