Scotland 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

I am still chasing this. I removed the bridge in the relay socket and replaced with a 4 pin relay. I now get ignition switched cigar lighter and ancillary sockets BUT only in ignition position 2 or with the engine running. I have checked with Cheet2 and he has a similar situation. I have spoken with an auto electrician and he has tried different relays without success. Either there is a specific relay that is needed or some wiring change.

Will continue to beat my head against it.

Any decent quality 12V 20A 4 pin relay will suffice. Thumbs Up
Probably cost about £5.00 or equivalent in funny money.
Don't buy cheap if you want reliability.

Afraid it is being more complicated than that. A 4 pin relay gives the same symptoms. Live on ignition 2 but not on ignition 1 (despite the circuit diagram indicating Ignition 1).

Also, with the 4 pin in place both cigar lighter sockets and the front ancillary socket are live on ignition 2 but the rear compartment socket is live all the time. That would probably equate with the rear socket being on a different fused circuit from the others.

Although I can't quite see it at the moment I think there must be a wiring routing issue.

Incidentally a 5 pin relay has the same effect as the bridge between 87 and 87a. John

Pietertje,

As I understand it, what you are looking for is to have the rear accessory socket ignition switched.?

If you look at page 16 of the electrical circuit diagrams it would appear that the rear accessory socket (V113) does not operate through a relay in the rear fuse box but goes via a fused link (fuse 7) to the battery.

It might be possible to re-route that but you would have to bear in mind the loading on the wiring. John

What I am advising is to convert the present luggage space axillary socket to ignition control by simply interrupting the power cable to the socket with a relay, the relay being switched by an ignition switched source in the rear fuseboard compartment.
For that matter it would also be possible to insert the relay into the axillary socket earth cable to achieve a similar result.
The ignition source in the rear compartment is perfectly ok to switch a relay or two, I have used it to switch 2 relays to date without any issues.

Weegie thanks for your thoughts. I wish to make all (or at least the aux sockets) ignition switched.
The loading on the wiring is what holds me back to just fool around by trial and error. So I'm -very- glad with nicedayforit's help, who seem to have done this before on his car:)

So nice day for it. I went to a small autoshop around the corner, they only had a 24V 4 pin relay. Is that a problem?
Tonight I'm going to score some wiring. How can I distinguish the different type wirings (20A and 5A)?

You need a 12V 20A 4 pin relay only, 24V will not work.
Anyone selling vehicle cable should be able to sell you the correct 20A and 5A cable.

I am planning to wire up a smart relay by taking a tap off the existing rear socket to give a second switched 12v socket

bit expensive at £16 but provides a switched 12v when the input is greater then 12v (with engine running the rear perm live socket is greater then 13v)

Having a poke around to see whats involved in changing my permanently live cigar sockets to ignition controlled I found this gadget in the fuseboard position where a relay should be mounted for ignition controlled.
Looks like a relay but is obviously just another type of bridging piece.
All I need now is a 20A 4 pin relay to replace it with.

Not so much a fuse as a bridging piece, the two contacts provide a link between terminals 30 and 87 of a normal 30A relay.
The bridge was in position 1 on the diagram below, ie in the rear side compartment adjacent to the fuseboard and means both cigar sockets were live permanently.
Removing the bridge and fitting nothing in its place will mean the sockets are dead.
Removing the bridge and replacing it with a 30A 4 pin relay will convert the cigar sockets to ignition control.

Cigar Outlet Wiring summary

It appears as though the first L322s had the cigar outlets (and cubby box AUX outlet) wired directly from Fuse 1 (rear fuses). Then (fairly quickly) a more complex set up was introduced to allow for different configurations in different jurisdictions. For instance in Australia the design rules (in 2002) required cigar lighters to be off when the ignition is off whilst in the UK they should remain on.

So 2003-2005 cars had -
Battery --> Fuse 53 (front) --> IG switch Pos II --> Fuse 2 (front) --> operate relays in Rear Fuse Box
Battery --> Fusible Link5 --> Cable to Rear Fuse Box --> Fuse 1 (rear) --> [pin30] Relay132 Socket [pin87] --> Cigar sockets

For powering only when the engine is on (IG pos II) a relay needs to be fitted.
For powering when the key is turned to Pos I or when engine is on (IG pos II) a relay needs to be fitted, AND a wire has to be run from the front fuse box Fuse 7 to the rear fuse box to operate Relay132 (possibly through rear Fuse 5).
For powering the cigar sockets all the time a bridging link may be fitted between pin30 and pin87 on the relay socket.


Note the relay socket is a European layout, wired differently to relays used in the US or Australia.

Can anyone confirm this wiring for models later than 2005?

The simple link (shown in the picture) seems to indicate that pin87A is internally connected to pin30. Other posters have shown a yellow bridging module that connects pin87 to pin 30, which I think would be the best way to wire it.

For Australian owners who want their cigar sockets ON all the time (to charge phones, etc) a simple bridge can be made with 2 x utilux male pins and a short piece of wire.


Just pull out the relay and plug in the bridge. Pin87 to pin30.

Hi All, after a little help please.

I followed these instructions and replaced the small link with a relay and all was fine until I plugged a mini fridge in the passenger cigar lighter and subsequently blew something. I restored power by removing the relay and putting the link back from 87 to 87a but now I have some strange voltages.
I have replaced fuse 1 (don't know if the old one was blown cos I dropped it in the wheel arch) and now have the below readings.
Does anyone please have any info as to how the relay is fed as there is nothing in my copy of the rave manual, not that makes sense anyway.

I did notice fuse 2 in the glove box had blown and have replaced it but that just fixed the rear blowers.
