Rear wishbones and bushes

Hi all, the back end has developed a really loud squeak every time I go over any sort of undulation in the road. From what I gather on here it is probably the bushes that are worn. My indie says he is reluctant to change them one at a time and to be honest I agree with him. If one is gone, the others can't be far behind. My question is can the wishbones (upper and lower on both sides) be bought with all the bushes already in or is it a case of buying all the bushes separately, removing the old ones and fitting them seperately to my existing wishbones ? Either way up, does anyone have any favoured buying options/suppliers for these parts other than the stealers ?

Unlikely to be the wishbone bushes, squeaking from the rear over bumps is usually the top and bottom hub bushes, they are an enclosed rosejoint and when they dry out they wear and squeak like mad..

Around £35 each (there are 4, 2 each side)

I'd get new bolts, nuts and washers as well and then you will have to have the suspension set up as the top ones control the rear camber. Pete

Sounds like the same problem i had a while back. Rose joints replaced and all is good (apparentlythey were a pig to get off though!).

Agree with the others. Having done a full strip down and replacement of all wishbone bushes at the rear, I found no or very little wear on the inner bushes. Best replace the upper and lower outers first (either buy or cobble together a bush pressing kit)

The dry weather has led to many FFRR owners raising concern about squeaky rear ends though, me included!

Indeed Joe it was your excellent write up that saved me a fortune when mine started squeaking and I presumed it was the bushes, then realised it probably wasn't...

Mind you, just done both front lower arms and the bushes on them were well gone... and all the ball joints... like a new car now... Thumbs Up Pete

Exactly the same as i had for the last couple of months, same symptoms etc and very annoying. Panicked it was subframe/wishbone bushes, popped into a local garage who was too terrified to touch it so went to my local MD. They were great and suggested i pop it in when it is squeaking heavily and they would test drive it and stick it on the ramp for free Shocked i took it in and the tech said it was a rosejoint after driving it. I will book it in shortly Very Happy

I've got to have the rose joints done on mine over the next couple of weeks, sounds like a squeaky old bed spring as im driving up the road !

thanks for the replies guys. Out of interest, what is the worst that can happen with worn bushes ? I've got all 12 bushes plus washers and bolts being replaced by my mate the mechanic on Monday, he reckons its 2 days of a job. I'm taking no chances as i'm towing the tin tent plus grandkids to cornwall next week.

Theoretically the wheels fall off... although you would stop driving a long time before that, if the bush totally wears out it will start wearing the bolt that holds it in and then that will fail, however the bolts are huge on a Range Rover and would take years to wear out...

Ball joints however will wear to a point and then break, again though you would have stopped driving a long time before that happened as the noise would be telling you something...

Talking of bolts, I hope you have bought new ones for the bushes, the nuts fitted are one use only, the bolts will be in pretty poor condition... I have snapped two so far when removing them...

Which 12 bushes are you changing?? Pete

Worn bushes usually show up with excessive tyre wear either on the inside or outside, plus noises and poor handling. Sometimes this can be sorted by turning the adjustable bolt on the top bush, but this is only really useful if you have alignment equipment.


And I hope you are changing the tracking control arms (REAR) as well (there is an adjustable bolt on there too) Thumbs Up

You will need a four wheel tracking and alignment done when all are changed. .

Thanks guys. I have all the bolts, eccentric washers, nuts etc and I did know about the 4 wheel alignment needing to be done. I went to a LRparts place more or less next to the JLR plant in Halewood and was looked after very well. They were short 1 bolt but posted it and it arrived next day (today) in a box measuring 15"x10"x 10" ! The bushes are for both wishbones on both sides, =12 bushes.

My hub bushes were toast but my original wishbone bushes after nearly 140,000 miles and 13 years are still absolutely fine.... Pete
