Battery blues

Evening all.. Last night my son asked me to run him into town to the pub courtesy if “Dads taxis Ltd”. The problem was the Range Rover wouldn’t bloody start., gave it three attempts and dead. Ended up using the wife’s Yaris.
So put it on charge with my Aldi charger only to find 10.2v showing on the charger and so left it charging overnight only to find it still at 10.2v this morning. Anyway whipped the battery out and returned it to the motor factor hoping it will be replaced under warranty.
It was a Yuasa VBX5019 battery and the second one this year. I originally bought the first on in November 2014 and that failed in August 2015 and now this one appears to have failed too.
Admittedly the car is not used a great deal but when I do I try to avoid the short stop start journeys, I know these cars are known for high battery usage this seems a bit extreme. Any clues as to a cause/cure would be appreciated.
Apart from this the car been as good as gold and a pleasure to drive.

Check for parasitic drains and the alternator is healthy. An over charging alternator can wreck a battery.

If you don't use it a lot suggest you get a decent trickle charger (e.g. Ctek) so you can keep the battery in tip top condition. .

^^. Agreed ^^

If everything is in good working condition , either a mains powered conditioner or a solar powered if parked in sunlight .

The solar powered ones are handy if you gave a permanent 12v plug in the trunk for example , as you can just plug it in and stick it on the rear shelf .

I used a small one from maplins years ago that cost about 20 and had suction cups .
It went on the windscreen as that got light from a window in the garage , and it got unplugged and thrown under the seat when the car was being used .

Check the output from the alternator first... If all good and no other drains on the car? I personally would shell out the extra for a Gen Battery sir,,,

Too many motor factor batteries fail so i ALWATS use gen ones on my personal cars... Thumbs Up

^ It does seem to be the case but my Bosch S5 110AH from Eurocarparts has survived 5 years without problems.
I find it hard to believe Bosch/Varta run different specifications for batteries sold to car manufacturers compared to those sold on the aftermarket scene but who knows.
Certainly when I changed the fitted Genuine battery for the Eurocarparts battery the cases looked exactly the same but whether there was any difference in the battery plates I have no idea.
Bear in mind Bosch in particular through Eurocarparts, offer a 5 year guarantee, just a pity it is such an ar.e to change the batteries.
I'm sure the high failure rate of some batteries is down to the peculiarities and usage patterns of individual cars.

What capacity is the heavy duty supplied by main dealers? And how long do they guarantee it for?
Finally what does it cost?
Does the 2year approved vehicle guarantee cover the battery fitted to the car from date of purchase?

NDFI... I do understand where your coming from but! And it's a big but... 20+ customers/forum members came to me with Bosch S5 batteries and most have been changed once or twice under warranty by ECP and more than half of those customers have opted to change the battery type afterwards.
Not my opinion sir but fact...

I too thought batteries would all be similar in their makeup!

Just reporting back my findings to the forum chaps... Thumbs Up

Perfectly adequate though. The only way to really improve things with a battery is to look after it, since the cars aren't actually much good at keeping them well charged themselves. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

As above. Also worth whiping it out before the cold hits and doing a full regen on it if you have a trickle charger style device that can do it Smile

I've done it a few times to a battery i put into a car that only gets started once a month at the minute and had no problems with it Smile Albeit an old school 2.0petrol engine and 60ah rating Smile

I have a 110ah battery in mine and been very happy with it as the only time its let me down is when i ran 2 park heat cycles in the same morning as i forgot i had run the first one Sad The car was red hot inside though LOL Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

It is pretty much proven that if you use your FF little or left for a week or two you are going to end up with a flat one.Somewhere there is a slight drain or other slight problem particularly an older model and you are going to struggle without a trickle charger.Batteries like being used every day ,that is fact.

Interesting though you hear lots of complaints about the Bosch but not about the Varta. Maybe that is @ expectations?

I am on my 3rd Varta in 8 years though Wink (Although No.3 was bought early for my two battery setup Smile) .
