England 2006 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black
New EGR

Hi Members, Having just fitted a new EGR valve to my 2006 L322 RR because to old one that was completely shot away.
Can anyone please explain how the valve is controlled and how to test it is working correctly......Thanks

...and then fail your MoT, from around April onwards. Are we really still recommending something that depends on the MoT tester overlooking a major fail? Especially when the OP is trying to keep their car fully road legal?

i thought the new rules referred to dpf's and not egr's....


would the removal of an egr increase emissions, possibly but i doubt it..[unless someone knows?] ... - .- -.

Depends if you get a jobsworth MOT tester and really can they be bothered checking the EGR to see if it’s blanked off as in theory they cannot mess about in the engine area! Yes, by recirculating exhaust gas it decreases NOx emissions and it's removal is now failure under the new test rules and both the EGR and the DPF are checked under the new rules.

A lot of people that have removed them are hoping that the tester won't be able to see that it's been removed, especially if the hoses have been refitted, but that's leaving a lot to luck and slightly missing the point!

The relevant passage covering DPF's and EGR's reads:

"Any modifications/removal to emissions related devices, this includes DPF'S and EGR's is now a major fail.

Where a DPF canister has clearly been cut open and re-welded, it will now fail.

A vehicle fitted with a DPF that emits any kind of visible smoke during the metered test will now fail"

If it's a td6 then the EGR is hidden behind a panel. The MOT tester isn't going to remove the panel to check i wouldn't have thought.

Ive blanked mine and I'm not worried.

@Paul, as long as your emissions are within tolerances ,and i think the engine running better will help then you shouldn't have a problem as far as i can see...



i think it's the dpf's that the testers will be looking at.. ... - .- -.

Many people might take this view: "the EGR on my FFRR will fail and cost me lots of money at some point. Given that the MOT tester won't and can't examine the EGR itself, I might as well get the EGR valve(s) blanked off. As a result my car will run better and it'll save me money."

I'm not saying that's my own view, but I'd be interested to know who disagrees with this view and why.

Good question, well asked! In my view:

1. I would suggest that we have a moral responsibility to others, as well as self interest for ourselves and families, to minimise the pollution that our cars produce, by maintaining the emission control systems that they were fitted with from the factory.
2. It’s likely to be a lot cheaper to fix a broken EGR valve than reinstate one once it and any associated gibbons, have been removed.
3. All vehicles registered since 2014 will be tested to the similar pollution standards to those that they initially had to pass for approval (assuming that they were ever capable of passing them in the first place, which will be a proper worry at MoT time!). Consequently, I’m concerned that they’ll ever pass at all, let alone those cars that have had their emissions equipment knobbled.
4. The more people that disable these systems, the higher the levels of pollutants, the more likely it is that we’ll all be saddled with ever more difficult to pass tests and the greater the excuse for central government and local authorities to hit us with (additional) imaginative tax raising schemes.
5. It’s true that the MoT tester can’t remove components to check what’s underneath, but it’s risky to assume that they aren’t a resourceful bunch of individuals who aren’t beyond peering behind a cover with a mirror and a torch to look for obvious signs of tampering; it’s their licence to test that’s at stake.
