This is the one I went for and certainly is same size and same CCA rating as what was fitted, which I believe to be the original as it was Land Rover branded one (made by Varta). No problems so far.

Dr Rob,
Same physical size definitely, but not sure about CCA, maybe slightly higher than original, but I think the same battery as genuine LR product.
It certainly works well on these very cold mornings.

It needs to be an AGM battery, even though 2011 4.4 tdv8’s aren’t stop/start.
Mike.
Sorry to jump in on this thread, but why would you need a stop/start battery on a 4.4 which is not a stop/start model, i asked because i may need a battery for my Westie which has not been started for 2 mths.

I got into a debate on a fb group about this, I suspect the stop/start mentioned in various battery suppliers' listings refers to the push button start (ie final facelift) models since as far as I know no L322 had the stop/start function. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Early 4.4tdv8’s were not supplied with AGM batteries, but were recalled for all of them to be changed out for AGM types because the originals were not up to the job.

Digging up an old thread, but it's probably one a lot of people use as reference so it's perhaps worth adding too.

The probable reason for the AGM/Start-Stop battery being used in the TDV8's is likely due to how they use the battery - most vehicles will start to charge the battery from the alternator as soon as they start and throughout the length of the journey, the battery therefore gets charged back up very soon after starting.

The 4.4 TDV8, in an effort to improve efficiency/reduce emissions etc, doesn't start to charge the battery until the engine is warm. This means the alternator can be disengaged from the drive train and save a few bhp. It's helping with fuel efficiency, but then it's of course putting more strain on the battery as it's draining it more deeply on each start/stop cycle.

Caveat to this is at idle and under zero load, the battery *is* being charged. It also charges if the car is freewheeling, eg: going down hill in gear, or decelerating on the motorway - any time you see 0mpg on the realtime fuel usage readout it's probably using the alternator - you can think of it as a very basic form of regenerative braking! Smile

The alternator runs at a slightly higher voltage and can dump a lot of current back into the battery, so the AGM battery can be charged up more quickly once the engine is at temperature.

If you think about it, this is very much like the behaviour of a start/stop equipped vehicle, where the battery also gets more deeply cycled on a normal run and needs to be charged more quickly to keep it topped up. Basically the 4.4 TDV8 abuses it's battery a bit more, so it needs the AGM batteries qualities of being able to handle a more deep cycle and be charged more quickly.

Smile

Thanks Siftah that’s very interesting.

My alternator failed two weeks ago

I have now replaced it but before putting the coolant in and under trays back on I thought I would start it to check it was ok.

When started it did not charge (Volts remained at 12) but did not display charging fault on the dashboard or on the IID tool. I could only run it for a short time because of no coolant.

The next day I refilled the coolant and ran it for longer. It then started to charge at what I thought was very aggressive - 14.9v.

I was unsure of what was going on but what you said explains everything.

That sounds pretty consistent with what I’ve seen, yup.

14.9 is a little higher than I’ve seen, but it depends on external temperature and how flat/charged the battery is.

It could also be that my alternators on the way out too 😂
