Aberdeen member installation of Matts FFRR Paddle system

well here is my photo picture story of the fitting of the paddles to my V8 4.4 54 plate 3005 model

Simon at powerful UK helped with reduced cost on the paddles from his listed price to get this done.

Matt has done the hardest part with all the wiring mods identification!!

so here we go

the bare down paddle board prior to resistor removal

the preparation of a jumper wire, use the remaining wire to guide and help position it then trim with scalpe knife

then attach to the lower 2 connections as defined by Matts instructions

STAGE 2 OF PADDLE SHIFT UPGRADE

Well been busy this afternoon and here is the installation photo's for the receiver unit wired into the gearbox controll area and how I powered it up off an ignition feed.

remove top center surround

this allows you to see the purple connector Matt identified as being required

with the top central main consule cover removed you need to connect to the Blue and Yellow and the Blue and White cables on the purple plug

I have splice soldered CAT5 network cable onto the original connectors and then re-inserted them into the plug holder

I then test wired up the receiver and tested it by powering it up via the cigarette lighter wires, with the wiring of the Blue and White cable to the channel 2 furthest from the power connections which is operated by the right small button of the transmitter and the Blue and Yellow to the channel 1 middle connections to the larger button on the controller. this then allows the large button to corrospond to the left down paddle with blue wire,
and the smaller button channel 2 to the up shift paddle with the gray wire.

here is where I routed the reciever antenna once I had placed it down under the central dash controls where in front of the gear lever is a opening and empty space.

the place I got power via a inline fuse holder is from the ingintion on green and white wire from behind the gear lever area under the drinks holder, and the earth is from the cigarette lighter in the central storage area, the Brown wire.

next is to disconnect the battery and play under the steering wheel air bag!!!!

Well got the air bag off once the battery had been disconnected today and got stuck in!!!!


Wheel off and paddles fitted, about 10mins!

just have the massive challenge to get the paddle to operate the remote transmitter now!!!

think this is going to be very fiddley!!!

thats the easy bit Thumbs Up if you go back to the start of the thread jonno explains where to put the wires i removed the switchs from the sender Thumbs Up

And don't forget to set the reciever to "pulse" or it just won't work!

whats that massive electronic box for at the bottom of your steering wheel as on mine there was nothing there and thats where i fitted the sender "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

its the ecu that controls the heated steering wheel.

What would help everyone including me!, would be acouple of photo's of a wired up, swicthes removec transmitter!,

I have a 2007 Range Rover with heated steering wheel so do not have the additional circuits available through the "clock spring" as JLR call it, BUT studying the wiring diagrams I could see that the heated steering wheel wiring has a seperate ground and 12v supply wire (from the ignition) to the normal steering wheel switches. This is to allow it to be fused seperately I guess.

Normal swiches are off a 5 amp fuse and the steering heating off a 10 amp fuse. SO by using the ground and supply wires for the heated steering wheel only (wiring the normal switches across to this supply on the steering wheel side) I was able to free off two tracks from front to back to use for the paddle shifts. Makes the 5 amp fuse redundant and the 10A fuse is large enough.

Hence you CAN fit paddle shifts to older cars with a heated steering wheel with the existing hardware - no need for RF remotes etc. Much easier!
