Td6 up to 2007 model year = BMW 3.0 litre turbocharged diesel inline 6 (P38 was fitted with 2.5)
V8 up to 2006 model year = BMW 4.4 litre petrol V8

V8 from 2006 model year = Jaguar derived 4.4 litre petrol V8
Supercharged from 2006 model year = Jaguar derived 4.2 litre supercharged petrol V8
TDV8 from 2007 model year = PSA/Ford derived 3.6 litre turbocharged diesel V8

4.4V8i (up to 2006 MY)and TD6 are BMW engines
4.4V8i after 2006 and 4.2S/C are Jaguar Engines
3.6TDv8 is a developement of the PSA/Ford TDv6 and is not used in any other PAG /PSA vehicles, they are LR speciifc (at present!) The TDv6 is also used in the new Citroen C6 and big Pugs as well as S type and XJTDvi Jags but they have twin turbos and different lubrication systems suited to on road use whereas the versions for LR use a different lub system and only one turbo to suit offroad requirements

Oops Martin beat me to it!
And from personal experience of running a TD6 for 2 years - it's a wheezy old cart horse of an engine compared to the TDv6. It rattles and wheezes in a way most unlike the same engine in the X5 too.
