DRL's in foglights

I been looking at fitting drl's to the car but decided against all the after-market lights available due to the "stuck on afterwoods" look of them.
Had a look on Disco 3 and found this which I think has been highlighted before on here.
I quite liked the idea of the led rings inside the fog light housing and as a result took a fog light off the car and found the fog lamp assembly is exactly the same fitment as used in the D3 and for that matter the RRS.
Bought some led rings, fitted them as per the D3 forum guidance, wired them and below is the result.
The pictures don't do the leds full justice in daylight as they are very bright in reality and perfectly acceptable as drl's.
In the dark they are far too bright so I have wired them to come on with ignition on and so that they dim on selecting dipped beam headlights. The alternative would have been to wire them so they turned off on selecting dipped beam.
Having fitted them this way their operation doesn't affect the fog light operation at all, they work independently as originally.
I quite like the understated look of them, to the untrained eye they could be original fitment.
Carrying out the fitting is relatively simple, if a bit fiddley, and takes about 4 hours (if you're quick Very Happy ).
Also has the advantage that the lights could be removed without trace if you decided to sell the car as original.

Whilst I am sort of "Mr Original Man", I don't dislike them.............

I think Joe90 was looking at having his front fogs as DRL's - this could be an option if that doesn't pan out...

That's a good way to do it, looks good!

Can you put up links to the kit you used?

Here is my approach (as with Stan too)

These are the led rings I used but they are available from a number of sellers in
China / Hong Kong

Led rings

This is the relay I used to switch them.
You could use a standard change over relay and resistor but I thought it was easier and tidier just to buy the kit ready made.

@ nicedayforit

Yep, I used the same relay unit. Might add the Angel Rings to my setup Smile .

@daveo

The rings are 80mm external diameter and are mounted inside the foglight assembly just behind the front glass.
The foglight assembly comes apart really easily as below.
I stuck the rings in place with dabs of clear silicon, on D3 they seem to prefer use of a hot glue gun.

The wiring and switching for the led rings is totally separate from the wiring for the foglights themselves and so doesn't affect the i bus system at all. The led circuit isn't monitored. If you get a fault on the led circuit no fault codes show.
The only connections to the vehicle wiring are the connections for the ignition supply to switch the leds on, I took this from the red/green cable at the headlight plug on the LH side of the car and also a connection onto the larger yellow/green cable to serve the coil on the relay and so dim/turn off the leds off, at the same position.
Both connections were made by splicing into the cables and soldering the additional cables.

I quite like the look of these for my 2012 but.....

Is there any way to get a higher light output from the existing LE's in the headlights or replacing them with other LEDs as the existing ones are pants.

I haven't taken the headlights out of mine yet to take a look but is it possible to get to the led components without taking the headlamp unit apart and fixing it back together? Wot's that in old money

Looking at doing this mod but dont think the LED's bright enough compared to what you see on current models. The LED's need to be high output or have a lens to improve output like I think Davo was looking at in his headlamps, Any idea where to get such things? Mine was a blue one! Smile
