Speedo

Hi
I have just purchased a 2004 range rover TD6
Have you any ideas about the following fault.
The speedo goes up to about 50mph when you drive off and stays there, when i stop it slowly goes down to about 20Mph. Also the milometer is not going up on the dash.
I have had the pixels repaired and they tested the speedo and said it is ok.
Could it be a fault with the speed sensor on N/S/R Wheel or gearbox??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I have no faults on dash Big Cry

Can't see it being the speed sensor on the wheel or the instrument pack would behave normally, but wrong - ie it would record mileage and average speed at 50 mph. Also the steering will be pretty heavy as the servotronic unit will think you are doing 50.

Also, the car compares the speeds across all 4 wheels for the traction control, dsc, abs etc, so if the sensor was at fault it would think one wheel is spinning at 50 mph and the other 3 are slower, so would activate traction control and then wind the engine power back and you would end up pretty much stationary with your foot hard down on the throttle.

My guess would be further up the command chain.

Does the range reduce on the computer as you are driving etc ?

Was it working before the pixels were repaired ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Hello Thanks for the reply
The pixels were faint when I purchased vehicle. The digits counted down when I drove it home.
Isent dash and radio display away for pixel repair they tested speedo and said it was ok.
I get no sound from radio also.
Everything else seems to work not sure about the abs though
I don't know if the speedo worked before the pixels went wrong as I purchased it with the faults.
I have just ordered a Hawkeye BA 5070 fault code checker i hope that will shed some light on it. .

Thanks I will give that a try I looked at several eart points and they looked ok but I will take them apart when I do a battery disconnect. I will check alternator first as well as reading your forum suggests they are very sensitive Electrically.

I meant was the speedo working correctly before you send the instrument cluster away for repair.

Can't see it being the gearbox as the speedo is not fed from there.

Like Stan says, a battery disconnect is not a bad idea, just to try and reset it, as it were.......

Does hill descent work ? Only asking as that uses the signals from the wheel sensors.

Here is an extract from RAVE detailing how the speedo works. RAVE is worth downloading if you have not got it. There should be a link in the Wiki.

As the hi-fi is not working also, may be worth checking for water ingress in the boot area. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Also, you can access the hidden BMW test menu by using the procedure below.

Test 2 will run a test on the instrument cluster ;

Instrument Cluster Tests

Ignition key must be “off”.
• Press and hold the Check Control button in the instrument cluster (RIGHT button), and turn the ignition key to the first position (KLR).

* You will first see "Check Control OK", some seconds later you will see "Test Nr.01"
* Push the left button on the instrument cluster to see the car's identification number. Add the 5 last digits (not 6) together and write down that number, you will need it for unlocking all the functions. Example: A123457 will lead to 2+3+4+5+7 = 21
* Push the right button until you see "Test Nr.19"
* Push left button until you see the number that is equal to the one you calculated above
* Push right button again

1. Display Car's identification number, HW/SW version, construction date
2. instrument cluster self test. Will light up all lights and run all guages
3. Current consumption (liters/hour)
4. Average consumption (liters/100 km)
5. Current range
6. Remaining fuel in tank. Three sets of numbers: A/B/C. C=total amount.
7. Engine RPM / Coolant Temp (C)
8. Current Speed (kph)
9. System voltage at Term. "R" (Battery Voltage)
10. Country/Language (UK, US, Spa, Ger, Jap, etc.)
11. Units am/pm
12. Average Speed
13. ETA
14. Date of Software Mask
15. Production Diagnosis
16. ""
17. Display Vehicle Specific Data
18. Alarm Changeover (cont. vs. intermittent OBC chime)
19. Lock/Unlock
20. Correction factor for fuel consumption (nicht ändern!)
21. Reset all defect codes 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Thank you very much for your replys
I really appreciate the help. Thumbs Up

The speedo was not working correctly when I purchased it, I was hoping it would be ok when I got the pixels sorted.

I don't know if the hill decent works because the top of the switch has been broken off, I need to source another one A.s.a.p.

I will go and try your suggestions now and keep you posted.

Thanks again. Thumbs Up

Hi

I carried out the battery disconnect - re connect operation following the correct procedure - No change.

Battery voltage is 12.7 Volts
Charging voltage stable at 14.15 Volts
So that side of things seem ok

Carried out BMW dash test no2 and the speedo only goes up to 45 Mph And when it goes down it stops at 25 Mph for 30 seconds approx before going back to zero which is a long time after the test has finished.

All the other instruments go right up and back down all ok

Does this mean i have a faulty speedo ? or is it related to something else being faulty?
A million dollar question Big Cry

The trip on the LCD seems to be working ok also. But when set to speed on the LCD that is not working correctly, is does go up to .8Mph when you are travelling at approx 20Mph.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'd say the instrument cluster has failed the self test then, mine goes all the way around and then back again.

At this point, I'd find out a bit more info in that area, as I've only used logic and rave info to get this far. I'm no instrument cluster expert so I wouldn't buy a new unit without doing a bit more research.

Pity you can't borrow another unit to try.

There could be people on the internet that fix these units.

I believe the self test is self contained in the unit, if you get my drift, so the signals on the car etc could be fine.

Beyond my knowledge now I'm afraid.......

Have a look on the web to see if bmw's have any similar issues, as it's all the same kit....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Just be aware, the dash binnacle is a one hit wonder... i.e. you cannot reprogram me it into another car once it has been programmed. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replys

So i couldn't just swap the whole dash cluster for another to try, Is that what you are saying ?

Could i swap just the speedo dial ? Is that possible?

I will ring the company that carried out the pixel repair and see what they say, As they told me they check all the instruments when they repair the pixels and i did tell them the problems i had with the speedo ETC and they told me the stepper motor in the speedo was ok. I will check with them as to what extent they tested the speedo. And have a search on the internet for any clues also.

Ah, so you can't replace it with a unit from a scrapper, or even substitute it to aid fault finding ?

Bet it's not cheap for a new unit, especially as you may not be able to return it if it's not the issue.

...........right, just had a look in my notebook, in November 2012 I was quoted for a new instrument cluster at £770 new and £594 exchange, inc vat.

Shocked you could buy another car for a few hundred quid and pay a mate to follow you shouting the speed out, for that money ! 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Yes, unfortunately you VIN lock them when you programme them. So, no you cannot test it with another... Neutral
