Sticking caliper? Fix or replace?

So after having the rear brakes replaced I'm bedding them in. Long journey. Starting to get some vibration from the rear and pull in at the services. OSR wheel and disc are hot, did the water test on all wheels and sure enough its boiling. I suspect a sticking caliper.

Is it possible a local garage can rebuild a brake caliper or is replacement the only option? Discovery 4 HSE

My local Indy replaced mine and the pad and caliber they had just fitted when the car was in for attention. Initially they reckoned that it was retracting enough but it wasn't - I just let them get on with it. However I think they can be rebuilt/repaired. Geoff

I rebuilt mine. 3 months later it jammed on.

Put a new caliper on it at that point. Only £60 or so for a new one Thumbs Up

Sadly it's £142 for a new caliper on the 5.0 supercharged Discovery 4 HSE

And of course, it's recommended that they get replaced in pairs!

In fact, you might as well do all 4 for good measure! Razz Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I hate to say it Adam, and at the risk of provoking an argument... The calliper would have almost certainly been apparent on a test drive before/after fitting your new rear brakes!!! Why did your "money saving" people NOT pick it up? Would have certainly been picked up here or "i would hope" at most GOOD dealers/indie's...

Have probably cooked your new rear pads now! Hopefully NOT warped the new disc (they don't like excessive heat when they are new...

So, to answer your question Adam... Replace BOTH rear callipers now... Its FALSE economy to either replace "only one" (as the other will follow it soon enough) or take the risk of rebuilding it!!!

Just my 2p worth... Bow down

My tuppence worth:

I replaced the front discs and pads with a Brembo set from AF last February. The car didn't do it before but therafter exoerienced intermittent brake squeal. The brakes do perform well however.

I queried whether a sticking Brembo caliper could be the culprit and the Master Tech told me "we don't get many problems with the front Brembo calipers sticking". Basically meaning it could be the pads. He did did say the rear TRW (on the 4.2SC) calipers are known for sticking, as many forum members know.

I replaced the rear discs and pads with a Brembo set from AF last spring. I also bought a pair of new TRW rear calipers from AF. The rear brakes have performed faultlessly and quietly since being fitted.

Of note was that AF offered a discount upon return of the old calipers and so you can buy one new TRW caliper for approx £104.54 and when they receive the old caliper back at your postal cost, they refund £54 per caliper:
http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/c-bhu341e...1622-p.asp

So, a tad over £100 for a pair of rear TRW calipers plus negligible extra labour costs at the same time as fitting new rear discs and pads.

Thumbs Up

I didn't think the 5.0 rears were TRW right enough. Companies doing exchanges/ refurbs on Brembo/ other 6 & 4 pot calipers:

According to Steve @ AF:

It would be a TRW exchange unit - same as LR would supply, price is plus a surcharge which you get back on return of old unit. Discovery 4 HSE
