I like them both. I wouldn't trade the FFRR, but if I had to, D3 over D4 just because I'd like the look of the price tag a lot better.

The D3s are definitely cheaper.

Now, if Father Christmas showed up with both in his sack, completely gratis, I'd change my mind. I'm no Discovery expert (well, I do have one, but it's a D1) but it looks like they did some significant retrimming on the D4 interior and slapped on a bit of wood. Looked VERY nice, from what I remember.

Have to say, with the exception of front lower arms at 50k ours has needed nothing. The only problem it's ever had is when it got stuck and the handbrake drums got packed with mud.

Yes, despite what many say, you're not alone in that, but sometimes they can take a lot of maintainence.

I do most stuff on mine myself so I save a small fortune and get stuff done nice and early, but this year it has cost me a bomb, having had a new TC done this summer, as part of a major body-off job to get many other things done too, when it was then discovered that the turbo was knackered. Since then I've still had to fit a new alternator (previous owner had fitted a Lucas one...) and the latest was a new rear prop which I fitted yesterday.

Though it has cost me a lot to run, I've only ever had one outright breakdown - NSF CV joint went with a bang - which was, fortunately, at the end of my road, so I limped it back and fitted a new driveshaft the next day.

Including body repairs, paid for by the insurance company, after an unfortunate incident with a large deer, it's had significantly over it's value spent on it in the past 2 1/2 years (mostly in the past year). I wasn't so minded to spend so much with my first D3 which was why I got shot of it as the clutch was going, but this time round, I have an auto HSE with nearly all the extras and I'm in it for the long haul.

It makes for much more relaxing ownership when you can self-service, spot problems early and keep an eye on things yourself, and there's a never-ending list of mods to tick off one by one...  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

It's a shame the next one is clearly going to be far less useful and far more lifestyle - have to hope the new Defender takes up the mantle.

I'm reserving full judgement until the D5 is revealed in full, but fully expecting the worst, I do hope so too. It will be a great shame if the balance is disturbed though, and neither is quite right.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
