Windscreen replacement

My front screen has a couple of chips in it and yesterday, I found that only the passenger side is clearing when the heat is switched on.
I want to get it changed, but I would prefer a genuine LR screen as all the glass (up to now) is, as far as I can tell, original. So the likes of Autoglass supply genuine screens on request? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Are you paying for this yourself, or through insurance? (windscreen cover)

If you are paying yourself, Autoglass will source a LR screen if you want - at a price (much more expensive than e.g. Pilkingtons branded)

If using glass replacement cover on your insurance - prepare for a fight if you want a LR screen!!

Don't know about the RR, but for the Freelander 2, the heated screens were all made by Pilkingtons - and either LR or Pilkington branded - but the cost difference was massive!

Where's the difference? Just had my screen replaced recently - the only difference i found was that there is about 8mm gap between the L and R side heating elements - so you have a thin vertical frost line directly in the middle of the windshield. Can live with that to now.

Any other differences?

Had that gap on every car I've had with the heated screen. Keeps the two banks of heating elements seperate as the current runs up one side and down the other doesn't it?

I'd reccomend Autoglas, if you want it fitted by a trained chimp that will try and seal any gaps with three tonnes of black mastic. Rolling Eyes

I had a mare getting a heated screen for my Classic years back, but I did eventually get it sorted.

The car should have had a headed windscreen but had been fitted with a plain one at some point - no heater.

When it cracked again I rang around for a few weeks eventually getting one fitted locally with heating and the guys just wired it up from the connectios left redundant.

Worth sticking to your guns to get it right. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

Well, would you believe it! After replying to this thread in the afternoon, I got a nasty chip in the windscreen thiis evening - as it is large and in the drivers field of vision it will have to be replaced! Big Cry

Looks like I will be reaquainted with the local Autoglass. Not looking forward to it - in my experience results are 'variable'.

Just to confirm, to my knowledge all heated windscreens always have the 'gap' between the drivers and passenger side elements.

I've not had the gap on any of my RR's. The L&R are completely separate circuits and technically, the current will only be running in one direction - either up or down depending on the polarity. Razz

I had Carglass do the work here in France because I agreed to having them do the work when I insured my car. Anyone else and my premium is higher. I have no idea if Carglass and Autoglass are related, but I can tell you that the work that he did on the windshield itself was impeccable. No 3 tons of mastic and if there is a leak it will be a freak accident. After watching him work - and admiring his specialist tools - I can guarantee that no dealer would have installed my windshield better (the actual glass, that is). Quite likely, they, the unpracticed dealer monkeys, would have done a worse job on the glass. He did break 2 clips on the new A-pillar covers and re-installed all the plastic rivets w/o the center pins... Didn't watch closely when he finished up and now have to have him come out again sometime. I'd prefer to have the actual glass work done well, tho. No leaks or other major problems. The clips I can sort myself if need be.

I think most dealers use specialist glass repairers as opposed to their own staff.

I have had a dealer replace a windscreen and was surprised to see the Autoglass van turn up!

When questioned the comment was that "we all do" as they know how to do it properly!

Had my Discovery glass changed - Dealership don't do it themselves.

ISTR they don't do A/C themselves either.... Land Rover Addict
