Do My Brake Discs Need Replaced?

Gentlemen,

I seek your opinions as I'm unable to decide whether my brake discs on my 4.2 SC need replaced.

I've not got a micrometer and have no measurements to be definitive, but one garage says replace and another says to leave alone. Both have a noticeable lip to them.

I'm about to fit new pads front and rear and the SC is taking us to Scotland in 3 weeks' time. Logic and common sense tells me to replace them.

What say you?

i would replace Si.....if you're fitting new pads then the extra effort and expense to fit new discs is certainly worth it... ... - .- -.

What Stan says... with brakes, steering and suspension I always err on the side of "if in doubt, change it"

I have previously erred on avoiding posting on here purely out of embarrassment as I believe I ought to know such things, but self-doubt has crept in and conflicting opinions by garages confused me even further.

The brakes as they currently are, are wonderfully judder-free and make no noise, save for a low-down grumble suggesting pad wear. I know my pads are low, though no warning light as-yet.

Sod's Law suggests the usual post-fix issues with squealing, but I'll order some ceramic or Mercedes grease to minimise that, from reading previous posts on here. Previous searches provide no pictures of worn discs, so maybe it's more common sense than anything else, and hence my own pictures.

I think I change discs every 2-3 sets of pads as it's only a couple of hundred quid so would always err on the side of caution if changing the pads anyway Thumbs Up

The workshop manual will give a minimum thickness that they don't recommend going below, so technically it is not a subjective matter, yours look like they will be very close to the minimum, especially the fronts. Most mechanics will give you advice based on looks as opposed to the actual measurement, both you have spoken to are correct, you could get away with another set of pads without issue, but the discs could do with replacing... sounds weird but true.... Nothing wrong with asking for a second opinion, either on here or at another garage...

No one on here will criticise or think badly of anyone asking questions, none of us know all the answers, that's whats great about this forum, usually someone has seen it or done it....

You could of course wait until you get to the wear ridges, they fit them to discs on high performance cars, some think they are ventilated for cooling, but its to let you know when to change the discs really..... Whistle

@ Bellini, Good man, that's what I used. I always changed discs and pads together (some may say wasteful as pads wear faster) My rationale was that if there are any minor ripples/grooves then the pad may have issues bedding in due to uneven friction and therefore potential hot spots.

As you say for the weight and power of the beast it's worth the extra for the peace of mind.

I also confess that I quite like the idea of completely refreshing the system and having a good look over the hubs etc while it's all in bits. I liked that the Brembo discs have a much nicer coating on the hub/bell area.

Si, it might be worth mentioning that using aftermarket pads might give you problems as i did..changed my pads to OE from ducky dan and all is well.. ... - .- -.

I read all the threads on here regarding pads and three things were prevalent:

1. Order LR pads.
2. Order Brembo pads (made by Jurid).
3. Order ceramic grease.

Some say ONLY LR pads. Some say they all squeak. Some say Brembo pads. I couldn't differentiate between LR and Brembo from the reviews, so went with Brembo believing they were original fitments. I suspect, now that I have them, that they're not.

It seems the pad and disc manufacturers make a contentious discussion.

I have ordered Brembo pads and discs, but I'm open to persuasion on the pads should anyone feel like mentioning it. Si. <This is my name.

as it happens mine were brembo pads from AF and steve was very good at trying to resolve the 'grinding noise' i had when they were fitted...they did quiet down after a while but i had to get OE to sort it...

it just might be that i had a rogue set so yours hopefully will be ok.. ... - .- -.

Im sorry to be the voice of doom sir Embarassed If your going to replace the discs & pads on your SC? Do it properly and do it once using Dan...
Replace what you have using Brembo “Red boxed Brembo packaging” from motor factor’s like ECP and you will IMHO be flushing your money down the drain pal... Shocked
Your existing “worn out” brakes will give you a better “feel” and stopping experience than the “Brembo packaged” ones...

I had always believed that Brembo items are the genuine bits.

So the Brembo calipers on my SC do not have Brembo discs? I'm not trying to catch anyone out, but merely seeking clarification. I thought a SC had Brembo discs AND calipers? Si. <This is my name.
