United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Corris Grey

Well I love it. Never thought I would say that but JLR have 100% nailed it with this, well 90% Laughing

Same floorpan as Jaguar F-Pace I think but with LR capability. Although it allegedly sits between Evoque and Sport I would actually place it above Sport in the line up. It's much more aligned to the Range Rover Vogue, longer than a Sport and it doesn't look squat and muscular like the Sport, nor does it look like it's had a skip dropped on it like the Evoque. It does seem true to the FFRR lines and shape, just a bit smaller, but it looks "Elegant" which neither Evoque or Sport do. The same elegance which is synonymous with Range Rover since 1970. I actually think they've nailed it this time.

Many of you will know I've never considered Evoque or Sport as being Range Rovers, and I still don't. Opulence, elegance and sophistication don't go with WAG or Lager Lout types which those cars portray an image of, but this Velar has none of those rather vulgar qualities from what I can tell. It looks like a Range Rover, just scaled down a bit.

Air suspension is optional as far as I can see and also it doesn't appear to have a transfer box, just AWD. No 5.0 supercharged either, but a good choice of engines nonetheless. Trims are back to Base, S, SE and HSE. No Autobiography although I suspect it will come just as it has for others. Towing capacity 2500 kg which his plenty for caravans, not so good for those with Ifor trailers.

Just built mine on the configurator. £87k, which is almost identical to my D5 build and pricing. I know which one I'd have. And it wouldn't have 7 seats.

Oh, and the door handles look Cool

Overall I think it will be a massive success but it may well hurt sales of D-Sport, Evoque and it might even eat into FFRR sales; I know I would very seriously consider one. Very well done JLR.

I have to say I think your right. I think they've nailed it too. It's very nice. The D5 is not a pretty car and the rear end "must have number plate to one side" has failed miserably.

I've not read anything official yet but wonder if they'll deploy a 2.0 engine like the D5 or is the branding level too high/proud?

Either way, lovely looking....it'll nick a few sport sales I think Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I think all of tech inside and even some of the exterior feature (door handles and lights) make the L405 look slightly dated.
Maybe the future L405's will have the same technology. If I had the money it would be a tough decision between the Velar, RRS and RR now! Think it would still have to be the L405....

Great work though JLR looks like its dripped out of a tap that runs liquid metal. Stunning.

Well for me there's only one Range Rover and that is the FFRR. The rest of the cars that wear the Range Rover badge do so only for marketing purposes, so that they can sell the same car at a higher price that if it just wore a Land Rover badge.
That's not to say I don't like the Velar, I think it looks stunning indeed but what hasn't been mentioned on here is that you sit much lower in a Velar than you would in a FFRR. For me it lacks a few features of a proper Range Rover, the throne like seating position, the large glass area which enables you to have a good view around and below you and of course the split tailgate, as Clarkson said: where do you sit?

I like it..........haven't shown SWMBO yet, otherwise i'd be postponing my retirement...... Big Cry

I expect it will put a dent in resale value of used L405's too. If you think that people with say £60k to spend a few days ago could only have had a MY15 fattie but now they can get a brand new reasonable spec Velar instead (subject to waiting time).

Yes, I know it's not a direct comparison with a FFRR but I think for some it would be a hard choice. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Have you sat in one? I have, and it's not that much lower, no more low down than a RRS. And there's plenty of glass area unlike Evoque.

As for a hard decision, Standard Vogue or almost top of the line Velar. No choice really. Same spec on the FFRR would take you to 120k.

Tailgate not being split. Agreed, not right. But that and the lack of a full trasnfer box are my only 2 gripes.

I haven't sat in one but this presentation video the journalist says you sit much lower in the Velar than in a proper Range Rover. You can clearly see the seats are much lower and you have less of a commanding driving position.

Not *that* much lower although I do have the seat quite high. Didn't bother me in the way Evoque does. Even this D-Spot I have at the moment is just another Eurobox. The nextdoor neighbour brought one home (he works there) and I loved it. Yet I don't love the Jag F-Pace which some friends of our have, ostensibly the same car. Weird I know, but then I am a bit weird. Laughing

I fully agree, however i do wonder if the sport / evoke ect were to be badged as land rover branded vehicles if they would sell as well as they do now?

frankly i'm beginning to think there is to much choice, all the company's are jumping on it started with BMW making that god awful compact 3 series thing to compete with the business men driving mondeo's and just spiraled from there, years ago if you had a jag you have a luxury gas guzzling car (4 doors with a boot every one of them) now you can get estates, manuals, diesel's ect... stick to what your good at !

I totally agree, years ago it was a rarity to see high end cars. Now with finance available they've saturated the market. It's great to see so many people in the cars they dream of but it's gone from a 'wow look at that' to 'there's another Range Rover' cheapens the impact of them in a way.

However if they didn't diversify and make vehicles more available through varying price ranges I think sadly most manufacturers would die. Which especially for an icon like Land Rover would be extremely sad.

Don't be deluded to think that we on this forum are in the majority. We're not. The Classic, P38, L322 and L405...will always be what people associate the words Range Rover with, but they don't cover enough of the market. BMW, Audi, Mercedes drivers need tempting away and then there's the Japs and Korean cars that offer 7 year warranty but have generally awful interiors.

The ewok was dismissed by many on here as pointless, yet I see loads of them - and I am a fan of the Disco Sport. The RR Sport is popular too and the Velar will be a huge seller.

My point is, you are right...there really is one rangey for 'enthusiasts' but we're not marketing men, or accountants for JLR...if we were; a locking diff wouldn't be an option...it'd be compulsory Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Totally with you Nick, I like the whole range. I'd have any of them right now if I could!
