A leak off test might help to confirm things:

If you do end up taking it out and it's a pain i believe this is the tool to help remove it.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160508197919

I think the idea is to soak the injector with a release spray the night before trying to remove them but plenty of tutorials.

if you are going to buy a new injector the you can always plug it into the loom before trying to remove the old one to make sure it works and as above you can get the kit to do a leak off test but i think that only tells you how much fuel is not going down the injector but i don't believe it will tell you why but i am only learning myself when it comes to diesels

This is the tool you want to pull those injectors.. it screws on to the outer and inner thread for security and less chance of damaging anything.. it simply screws onto a slide hammer

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replys, I'm just waiting for the injector to turn up now so I suppose I should start drowning the old one in plus gas. Can't really do much until Wednesday when the Mrs finishes work for Christmas but after then I should have a free run at it.

As for the leak off tests, I suppose that would confirm what the IID tool was telling me as I'm guessing the +7 reading is the leak off value hence the higher the number the worse it is.

I'll replace number one injector as I know that's definitely dead then I'll look at doing a leak off test on the other five dependant on what the IID tool says and more importantly how the car runs!

Fingers crossed and all that!

When you are done reset the adaptive values via your diagnostics then give it a chance to settle down before any further test.
Make 100% sure the old copper sealing washer come out with the injector. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Wayneg, is that in the calibration section of the IID tool?

Not sure about IID Tool, I use BMW IPNA. There is just one button to hit " Reset Adaptive Values". I presume it's not necessary as the car will adapt on its own in time, but this gives it a reset. 2007 TDV8 VSE

I had similar symptoms. My car is now on 210k miles
No.1 injector swapped and it was OK for about 15k miles, then judder reappeared.
Checked harness connection and applied WD40 - OK for a bit, so Injector is OK

Suspected harness fault - insulation/brittle affects electrics.
Swapped for new harness (LR labelled from Rimmer Bros) and an hour's work.

No problems since.

New injector may not be the answer

Beemergriff,

I was kind of hoping it would be the injector harness as that would be easier to change.

Looking at it, I can see why the injector harnesses fail as they are typical bmw, full of joins and crimps which fail / corrode over time.

Unfortunately, in my case the harness is fine. I've done resistance tests and all is showing up ok.

I can unplug injector number one and there is no change to the engine tone whatsoever.
Plug it back in again and it starts clicking ( meaning it's getting power) but still no change to the engine tone.

My shiney new loom has arrived and I’m £166 worse off but mine is definitely duff, it’s my turbo actuator that is in need of TLC..

Well....

IT'S FIXED!

Ordered the injector that Wayneg suggested on Friday and it was here when I got home from work yesterday. I paid the £30 surcharge as I didn't want the stress of rushing to try and get the old one out plus the Mrs was still using the car. Surcharge is refundable when you send the old one back.

So last night I took the engine covers off and drowned the injector in wd40 as that's all I had.

This evening I got home at 4 and went out (In the dark) with the intention of pulling the covers off again and soaking in more wd40 ready for tomorrow but I got a little carried away!

Decided to try miggets method of popping the injector out so I loosened the injector bracket retaining nuts and fired it up.

Wasn't expecting it but by the time I got back under the bonnet the injector was rattling away. Undid the fuel pipes, removed the bracket and out it popped!

The copper washer didn't come out so I used joe90's method and attached some fuel line to the Dyson and sucked it out along with bits of crap that had got in there.

Built it back up, fired it up, problem gone!

Plugged the IID in and number 1 now showing -1mm3 rather than the previous 7mm3.

Checked the rest and they are all roughly the same apart from number 3 which is reading 3mm3 so I'm guessing that will be the next to fail although I believe it's still well within tolerance. I'll check again after I've run it for a few days.

Just been for a 60 mile run and it's nice and smooth again, loads more power and the economy has shot back up.

Funny thing is I booked 3 days leave in anticipation that this was going to be a nightmare, so I suppose I'll spend some time cleaning it instead!

EGR delete is next on the list.

Thanks to everyone who has offered advise and steered me in the right direction.
