2011 4.4 TDV8 - gearbox flush/fill?

Hi all,

My FFRR has just gone over 110k and I would like to change the gearbox oil (and sump/filter). I'm more than capable of taking the sump off and doing a partial oil change myself, but I would prefer to have it fully drained and filled by a 'machine' which can remove every last drop of the old stuff.

Any recommendations for anywhere that can do this? preferably in the northwest.

The gearbox is making no funny noises and is working wonderfully but i intend to keep the car for another 50k+ miles so want this doing.

Thanks in advance Smile

Will

Hi

You're a bit far from my indie to recommend him but don't underestimate how complex a job refilling it. Excuse me if I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs but draining is the easy bit. Once you've actually located the drain plug and procured the specialist LR tool to get the plug out that is.

I believe refilling is a staged operation relying on pressures and correct processes and the potential to cause damage if not done correctly.

I have the ZF procedure .pdf if you want to drop me a PM.

gearbox drain

Hi,
I just did mine myself got genuine ZF6 fluid from Island 4x4 half the price of a main dealer.

If you buy yourself an infrared thermal device....about £12 and follow the ZF Instructions its very straight forward.

Made a world of difference on mine did it last week at 98k. Mines a 3.6 TDV8 6 speed.

I used about 14 litres to flush it through till it was clean. A bit messy but now done and its great. Used a genuine filter and sump from dealers at £112.

Heard a lot of horror stories so played it safe and did it myself.

Best

There are some YouTube videos on the process but confidence is required. Thinking I should get mine done for peace of mind but this job would be way over my limited mechanical skills.
The only i reason i even looked in to the how to part was to have the assurance no corners were cut. Will go down the Indy route and have procured a quote, 620.00 notes all in.... Shocked

Postponed for a couple of months as just had new brake and discs all round. Which have made a huge difference to drive much to my suprise. All original OEM of course as numerous threads would advise. Had hoped to save a few quid by supplying my own parts via Duckworths but when i proposed this to the Indy, the labour rate went up by 25 per hr! Rendering it a pointless excercise (sorry Dan). I guess they need to sell their own stock to preserve margins. Range Rover Vogue SE 2010

Either way, 14 litres of Lifeguard 8 (for the OP's car) won't be cheap. Lowest price I can see is MyTyres at £14 per litre. So that's £200 minimum for the fluid, ouch. Opie Oils are asking £30 per litre and the RRP is £43!!

Not concerned about the cost - it is what it is- v interested in the approach as I’m torn between flushing via the oil cooler lines and replacing all fluid vs the double drain/refill approach 4.4 AdBlu Tractor

Thanks for the input guys. I think I have 3 options then:

1: DIY: Purchase sump kit and 8 litres of oil. Do the drain/fill procedure twice, hope to get approx 4 litres out each time. With a few miles in between my sums say this this should remove 75% of the old oil.

2: DIY: Purchase sump kit and 12+ litres of oil. Attempt a DIY flush by disconnecting a cooler hose or similar.

3: take a day off work, take it somewhere within 150 miles that can do it properly and have a pub lunch while i wait.

Option 3 is my preference, just need to find somewhere. But, I am convinced that option 1 would be more than good enough.

Any details of the special tool for the drain/fill plug?

Cheers,
Will Smile

Option 3,
I took mine over to Selby in Yorkshire if you are interested?
£450 for a flush and re-fill, but no sump and filter change.
I wish I had insisted on having the filter changed just for total peace of mind.

Had mine done at my local indie including filter etc. 309 plus vat for the parts 300 plus vat labour. 731 inc vat bottom line.

Peace of mind included. Thumbs Up

I think its either do the job right or don't do it at all. Not sure about the pump out a bit and refresh option. sounds like a waste of time to me. 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
