Phone advice please!

What would you do?

Having lost my iPhone 3GS, and the insurance won't pay out, I'm trying to decide what to do.

I'm out of contract with o2 on the iPhone 3GS. The main reason I didn't upgrade was that i wanted to hang out for the (eventual) iPhone 5. And I like the 3, probably more than I like the 4.

I have an old work Blackberry which my SIM is in at the moment, but it's locked down with a company security policy so unless I get it unlocked somewhere, I can't do much other than calls and texts on it. Also, my o2 tariff is so old that if I want to use data on the BB, I'll have to change tariff. So that's not really a long term option.

So I guess my options are either buy a used 3GS and carry on waiting, or upgrade to a 4 and do without the 5 when it arrives.

Whaddya reckon?

You have what Exclamation Exclamation about 6 months to wait on the 5 being released , so maybe it would be worth your while just to get a used 3GS phone for the time being ….

You say your Blackberry is locked can you not phone the network provider for an unlock code , which they will send to you in an e-mail within 48 hours Thumbs Up

Buy a used 3GS. You'll be gutted otherwise to miss the 5, particularly as you don't like the 4. Also you probably won't even lose much on the 3 gs if you sell it in a few months. 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

The BB will require the BB add-on to work with O2 so it may not just be the company lock down on the device Sad

Failing that typing the password in wrong a few times often allows a full wipe of the device Smile

TBH what i've done is scrapped the normal companies and gone with GiffGaff as they were way cheaper and when i factored in buying the phone outright the savings made over a 2year term were £100's easily, even more if you get the phone cheaper or a used one.

Contract £10 PCM and gets 250mins, ultd text/internet Smile
Phone was £800 from apple, i got it for £500 Smile
TCO over 24months £740, the closest contract for the phone i wanted was £1280 over the same period, plus should i decide i want the 5 i can sell up without much loss and then get the 5 without having to wait Smile

Ps if you go with GG let me know and i'll send you a referrer link so we both get the same out of it Smile

If you liked your 3GS you could always buy a used one to get you by and then just do an itunes restore on it and you would be back where you were Smile and would be the cheapest option to get you by other than a bog standard basic phone Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I did the "10 password" thing but it didn't clear the security policies! So I'm stuck with it for now I guess.

Looks like the used 3GS is the way to go. Loads on eBay but I'm a little suss of buying from there. Anyone know of any other options? Do Mazuma etc sell as well as buy?

I haven't, but only because I've recently deposited even more cash into the Bank of Cupertino by moving from a PC to a Mac. There's enough learning here to keep me going for now without having to work out a new phone's features AND get it talking to a foreign laptop!!

I posted on Facebook earlier that I needed a phone and am now in the process of buying an IP4 from an ex-colleague, which wiil do me for now.

Another vote for the Galaxy S2. Depends on how you get on with the Mac TBH. I had the misfortune to be given a Mac in my previous job and I absolutely hated it, mainly because I'm a technologist and it was incapable of doing what I needed. I had the same thing with the iPhone, just too restrictive. Plus the Galaxy screen is significantly larger.

But, if you get on well with the whole Apple thing then I'd get a S/H 3GS and wait for the 5 to come out.

In recent times I've had: SGS2 / HTC Desire / BB9700 / Iphone4 / Iphone3 ... so here's some thoughts....

SGS2 - I've got big hands , and I find its too big for me. The standard samsung keyboard is a pain to get the punctuation. The swype keyboard is very good though once you learn it. Battery lasts pretty good as well. Biggest gripe about the SGS2 is that its slidey. It square shape slides out of my hands too easy and is no where near as comfy to hold as the 3GS iphone.

HTC Desire: Nice size, but the screen was waaay to sesitive and typing on it was often wrong.

Blackberry 9700 - I liked it for phone and text, but internet was crap.

Iphone4 ... i like it in terms of usability, so fast, so slick, but not the biggest fan of the shape compared to the 3GS.

3GS ... sooo comfy to hold ... easily the nicest phone to hold out of the ones i've had.

THe apple's keyboards always seem to get it right in terms of typing on them. The accuracy rate has always been better than any other touchscreen I've used.

------------------

The wife has just got the iPhone 4S and she loves it. I'm going to sell my SGS2 soon and likely get something a bit smaller to bridge the gap till my contract runs out and by that time I'll consider the iphone5.

I think I would stick with what you know and get an iphone to bridge the gap. You'll not likely loose that much money when it comes to reselling it later. V8 or else ...

Great report Fisha, thanks - and the IP3 shape is one of the reasons I never wanted a 4! But 4 it is for the time being. Let's hope they get the 5 right!
