Dog crate question for those of you with Labradors. What size crate do I get (getting a new puppy) and what crate / travel restraint is safest for the dog travelling in the FFRR. Simple question I know but this will be the first family dog so I havent got a clue on these things. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

We've got a lurcher, she's about the same size as a lab. Bit thinner though.

I don't use a crate for her in the RR. I've got the half-guard to stop her climbing over and into the back seats, I've got a hatchbag to protect the boot carpet and a rubber mat from LR just because it was supplied with the car, and to top it all off she's got a dog bed from Costco in there as well - fits the rear of the RR perfectly. She can potter round and bark at motorcyclists (don't ask...), but she can also lie down and relax in there. It's very comfy. She really looks forward to getting in the car. The only problem being that when she's in and you close the bottom half of the tailgate, you can't then close the top half because she's so busy giving you kisses to say thanks for the trip.

I tried using a seatbelt on a harness for her, but I found she's too big for that - all the belts I found were for designed for small dogs and I couldn't get one for a large dog at all.

We used a large crate at home and a smaller travel crate that took up approximately half the load space when our lab was a puppy. The crate was brilliant for travel, which we used to combine with the load net so effectively we didn't lose much load space as we filled one half with luggage & the other with the dog crate when on going holiday.

We even drove to Ireland when our lab was just 5 months old & left him in the crate in the car on the ferry as the lady on the kiosk said it was better than the on board kennels.

The crate doesn't need to be too big as they don't need to run around in it.

I never had to crate my Lab but he was 6 months when I got him from rescue

I had a medium dog bag for the car and he seemed happy enough in it

I know they don't show / list a FFRR, but they will make to any size you want, I'll be using the 1 out my Shogun, bit of vet bed in the bottom and job sorted.

The Lab is classed as a large breed dog - so look at the cage spec for that.

However . . . .

My 13 yr old bitch is what we call 2/3 scale (collie size), whereas our 5 yr dog, Monty is a monster at 1 1/2 scale and is built like a foxhound !

Look at the parents and the puppies forelegs for clues as to eventual size (around 12 mths for height / 18 mths for build)
