Reduced engine performance and rear differential whine

Hi Chaps,

Whilst driving north from the south of France today, my FF SC bonged and then displayed the dreaded 'Reduced engine performance' warning message, at which point the engine was massively down on power.

I was going up hill doing about 80mph Smile when it happened, and had 1/4 of a tank of fuel. I pulled into the next petrol station and filled the tank and all was fine again.

Is this the typical symptom for the famous SC fuel pump problem, or was it simply turning the ignition on and off that cleared the problem?

Thanks.

Justin (camping just outside Paris)

Wow, fantastic economy from the SC Rolling with laughter

.... Read quite a few threads regarding this issue, I'd say you experienced the fuel pump problem, either that or the supercharger aux cooling pump wired backwards can also cause this symptom.

Had that with the aux. coolant pump. All sorted under warranty. AFAIK the fuel pump stays quiet until 1/8th tank then cuts out, after a couple of restarts you'll get the low fuel pressure code.

That said when my coolant pump went south I didn't restart it so I dont know if a restart/rest clears it?

Good luck!

Given that you were in S of F and have never had that issue before, then I'd say it may be the SC electric aux pump wiring due to elevated ambient temperatures.....

I presume form your Fuelly stats that you regularly go below 1/4 tank on fuel ?

When I checked my wiring, it was as per the TSB i.e wrong which, in elevated temps would put the charge temp into a fault condition.

Hope you are having a good holiday, on a brighter note, If you were holidaying where we are then the wiring issue would be unlikely to cause an error message Big Cry Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

Colin - yes, I normally run my car very low and I've never experienced this before so it may be the aux pump issue, however when the fault occurred the temp gauge was showing normal temperatures.

As my car has a just over a month of warranty remaining, I will book it into the dealers next week. Hopefully there should be a fault code to help pin point the faulty component.

Cheers all Thumbs Up

At least you've still got warranty, if it the aux coolant pump, from memory it's about £120 and an easy fix.

Just one point, the temp gauge would still show normal even if the aux pump is causing the issue as its the charge / boost temp that gets too hot and brings the fault on to prevent detonation.

Whatever it is shouldn't affect the rest of your holiday - enjoy ! Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

What was the external temp? I had this on my 2006 SC and it was the wiring issue. Land Rover Addict

The external temp was 31 C, but I drove the same route last year and it was just over 40 C without problems.

Hi Chaps,

I dropped the FFSC into the dealers today and they diagnosed a faulty charge pump. It will be fixed either under warranty or more likely by LR directly due to it being well known a manufacturing issue, either way its not costing me Thumbs Up

My car also developed a 'worn wheel bearing sounding whine' during the final few miles home, and this has been diagnosed as a rear differential, fingers crossed the warranty cover a replacement, as I'm waiting for confirmation that the claim has been approved.

The service desk chap advised that the LR warranty company may insist on sending an engineer to listen to the whine, to confirm its bad enough to justify a replacement. Fingers and toes firmly crossed that it is, as the FFSC now sounds like a tube train pulling out of Kings Cross Station Censored

Cheers,

Justin

My thoughts confirmed, I was sure that the charge pump would be the problem Thumbs Up

And perhaps not a coincidence, the service history that came with my SC showed that a new rear diff was fitted at 59000 miles at a total cost of £1200 (500 parts / 600 labour) it was just out of warranty - I think i'd have been arguing that one on 'Good Will' as it was just out of warranty, but I reckon the previous owners were obviously not short of a few quid - they chopped mine in for a brand new 5.0 Supercharged....

The LR Warranty Company Assessor came out to check my rear differential today, and has agreed its bad enough to justify replacement. Thank bloody goodness, as the bill was looking like its going to be the wrong side of £1500 Shocked

Sadly the LR Select Warranty does not cover the charge coolant pump and LR have also refused to pay for its replacement. I've escalated the issue to Jaguar LR explaining that as its a well known manufacturing issue which was known about from when the car was less than a year old, and seeing as the car is LR supplied and still maintained by the dealer network then they should reconsider, and I'm now waiting to hear back Mad

Great news about the diff!

Keep plugging away about the pump- bloody cheeky Censored : known issue confirmed worldwide; no recall.

I got mine done under warranty.

My rear diff was replaced yesterda and my SC is silent again Very Happy

Still need to sort the charge coolant pump, but as the reduced engine performance only occurred once, i don't think it too urgent.
