How SHOULD the six speed box in the TDV8 behave.

Hi, Have read through as much as I can find here on gearbox issues but cant quite find the answer I am looking for so sorry if the answer is out there already.

1.) I am trying to work out how the gear box should behave so I can work out if issues are developing. Should all change ups and downs be smooth and not felt, only noticed in the change of revs?

Under hard acceleration mine is fine and smooth in all changes but under gentle acceleration the move from first to second feels like it slows the car down a bit while it changes and a change up if you lift of the gas at that moment is a very minor jolt. Also sometimes a slow change down, the change is felt with a little jolt. These are all very minor but I suspect a perfect working box you would not notice any of these things. I thought I would ask the experts here.

2.) Having read the large amounts of posts on the various gearbox issues, is the six speed a bit of a week spot then where people are not overly surprised if it pops over 70,000 miles?

Thanks in advance. !

It sounds similar to the issues I had, pre-oil/filter change (also the ZF 6 speed). I suggest to do a filter and oil change (probably a dual oil change) and a software update of the gearbox ECU (and other ECUs esp. engine management while you are at it). Just to make sure you have the latest updated version of the software on the ECUs. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Sounds like how mine was going too, some changes were lumpy and not as smooth as they should be.

I had my gearbox megaflushed and it has made a significant difference to the changes. Cost was £255. The benefit was that with a megaflush it changes 97% of the oil whereas when a Dealer does an oil and filter change it only changes about 40-50%, and costs twice as much.

Do a search on megaflsuh and my name and you will see the write up. Discovery 4 HSE

Suggest to do the megaflush and then change out the filter afterwards, to get all crap out and start with a new filter Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I don't think it will ever be perfect and as new. It smooths out the gear changes.

If you are not happy at that result there is a gearbox software update the dealer can do for you which is designed to alter the gear changes. Discovery 4 HSE

cheers, I will be happy with it as long as I know it is just a sign of age and not impending explosion and £6,000 leaving my ownership.

Although it could still be a major issue with the gearbox, it is much more likely to be the oil. I suggest to do the megaflush and filter change soon as and get the gearbox and engine management update done as soon as possible as well. Note that the gearbox and engine managment ECUs communicate with each other as in give each other data that makes them work together more smoothly. So best to get both updated while you are at it.

I am waiting to get my Faultmate back (with BBS for some communication issue) so I can do the same for my S/C. Since the oil change the gear change issues (small "imperfections" like yours) have gone but I still have random transmission faults coming up (only after pushing it hard).

I have been told by a reliable source that it takes a lot of time and effort to get everything to work as smoothly and quickly as it should be. Hence the development time of the software plus regular updates due to feedback from clients via dealers. That is why the ECU software keeps being updated throughout the years. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
