Not sure why anyone would be surprised really. Another statistic to back up my theory that a basic truncheon is all that should be allowed. they have to get up close & personal with one of those so there's no room for visual errors.

Quite how a white stick could ever look like a samurai sword is difficult to imagine though, although The Guardian is not exactly known for impartial reporting. There will be more to this I would think.

Initially, I thought he may have been doing 31 mph in a 30 zone........so had to react accordingly !!

Where has Common Sense gone ? It's definately not very common.

Its like a few years ago when there were floods all over, and a man got his foot trapped in a grate in the gutter at the side of the road. The water was prob about 2 or 3 feet deep and rising, and the poor sod died whilst rescue teams at the scene did a risk assessment........and then filled in a form.........and another form........

Rant over !! 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

This happened not far from me and it was bit more serious Sad

The policeman made a mistake and will be reprimanded and retrained I expect - the guy will get an apology and compensation but it should not have happened Embarassed

After Manchester he was probably feeling a bit vulnerable and it is easy to overreact if you think you are in danger - thankfully he was not carrying a gun Shocked Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

That was the point I was trying to make regarding going back to nothing more than a truncheon. The vast majority of people in general (not just police) simply do not have the right mentality or stability of mind to carry any kind of weapon.

It's really easy to say that they have been trained etc, but the cold hard facts are that whilst we all think we know what we would do when the pressure's not on, when it is turned up a bit the mind naturally moves into survival mode and it takes a really special kind of person to override that basic instinct.

As an old boss of mine used to say, "when you're up to your ar5e in crocodiles it's not easy to remain focused on draining the swamp."
