Hi, my rrsc is currently at a specialist having a new oil cooler fitted. Whilst its there do you think i should gear the gearbox oil and filter changed? the car is a 2005 supercharged model done 52k and as far as im aware it has never been changed. What are peoples views on this? Is it advisable or best leave it be. Thanks

Yes have it flushed and new filter and ATF

Absolutely........well worthwhile.........you'd kick yourself if you don't and god forbid something went wrong.

I've just had mine done as a precaution......some further peace of mind knowing its done. And not really expensive anyway....

I don't beleive the scaremongers who think it's unwise to change the oil. Does your car break down after an oil service? No. It lasts longer and runs better.

I had my gearbox Megaflushed, which replaces 97% of the ATF whereas the normal garage process of dropping the sump and filter only flushes 60% out, even if they do it twice. One flush removes 40% of the old oil. I DO think that if you only remove a partial percentage of the ATF and mix it then with new, you don't get the benefit, do you?

plus, the Megaflush routine was MUCH cheaper than the Dealer charge to do a oil change. Discovery 4 HSE

Hi, I've not heard of this 'megaflush' how do they do this and how can I find out if there's someone in my area? Also is it possible to check the level of the fluid yourself? Many thanks.

There’s a school of thought that, because ATF has a high detergent content, there’s a risk that the new fluid will clean out all the crud that’s come off the clutch plates, bearings, bushes, etc. over the years - that’s currently sat lodged in the various nooks and crannies in the transmission casing where it’s doing no harm - and send it through the valve block causing the transmission’s hydraulic control system to subsequently fail.

I don’t particularly subscribe to that view personally – when I had my torque converter replaced at 103k miles in my 5HP24 I had the transmission fluid & filter changed (for the first time) and have had no problems since.

Much more important is to use the correct Shell ATF M1375.4 / ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6 for your 6HP26 and a genuine factory filter, in my opinion.

Phil, logically I agree with you.

However, having had the oil changed in the Gearbox / Torque Converter on a digger, it was running just fine before. After the oil change its totally FUBAR'ed - wish I hadn't bothered.

Would it have failed anyway? I don't honestly know, there were absolutely no symptoms prior to the change, afterwards its bloody useless, intermittent drive and top speed of 1mph.
