So my EML came on about a week or so ago.

I took it to my local indy and they plugged it in and said that it was saying that 'bank 2 was running lean'.

As I'd just filled up with fuel when the light came on, they suggested that we clear the fault and see if it came back, as sometimes duff fuel can set it off.

30 miles later the light was back on, so took it back to them.

They looked for all the obvious stuff (air leaks / squidgey hoses etc) but there's nothing obviously wrong. As the car was running perfectly the whole time, they spoke to LR who suggested to try an ECU re-flash to reset all the parameters before starting to take things apart looking for the issue.

So, they did that. The car was running like an absolute dream when I picked it up (felt the most responsive it ever has since I've owned it) and I did a 150 mile round trip to Milton Keynes with no problems.

However, as I was parking up last night (having covered over 250 miles since the ECU reset) the bloody light pinged on again.

I've had a search and understand it could be any number of things (oxygen sensor / PCV valve etc) but has anyone had experience of the "bank 2 lean" message and if so, what was the cause?

I used to get it on my 2006 S/C, both before, and after I got it converted to lpg. People will often blame an LPG installation for it coming on, but from my research it just seems to be a common problem that it comes up as an erroneous fault.

In my case it was checked against live data, and just seemed to be wrong. I know it's a pain, but you may just have to live with it, or invest in some black tape!  2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

Get the guys to read that actual settings, things like fuel trim etc. On mine I am having issues, at some point I had 1 bank 2 lean and the other 2 rich !!! Run some fuel cleaner through it for a while and see if that cleans up the systems.

Mine is getting a new fuel pump, tank cleaned, injectors and valve cleaned. Have you had any transmission issues , like the 3-4 shift issue maybe ?? That can also trigger the fault I believe.

Keep an eye on my posts in the next month or so, I hope to be giving some positive news regarding bad shifts (can be fuel system related as well) and the running in general. That is once I get the new front struts as well (still not left the UK ) so the car can actually drive. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I had the same issue on mine - ran some BG44K fuel cleaner through it and it's been fine since - there was a TSB from land Rover to try that cleaner if you get this issue - I also put it down to running cheap supermarket fuel.

I put two lots of BG44K through the tank and then only ran it on 'decent fuel' and it been fine for about 3k miles now - give it a try....  Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

Have come across this a few times... Normally down to dirt in fuel/tank/lines... Back to the old argument of supermarket fuels im afraid... Put a very good quality cleaner through the system and maybe change your fuel station (if you mainly use the same one week on week)

Not sure I can 'live with it'. I mean I know the car is a few years old now, but we're talking about a vehicle that was approaching £90k when new, so I'd like it fixed properly.

Ebajema - I've not had any transmission issues whatsoever. In fact, the car has run perfectly since I've had it and there's no difference at all when the light comes on. And since having the ECU re-flashed it's all felt as tight as a drum and super responsive. It's driving great.

Are you having your tank cleaned, new pump etc as you've tried a fuel system cleaner with no joy or have you been able to specifically isolate those as the issues? (By the way, ironically, mine had just come out of the shop having had £800 spent on it on 2 new air springs when the EML came on...these things always seem to happen in pairs or threes don't they)?!

CG-SC - great advice, I've ordered a couple of cans of that stuff off of eBay, will run it through and cough up for a few tanks of premium fuel, see if that makes any difference.

And Craig - I used to use cheap supermarket fuel all the time until I read a few of the posts on this forum about 3 or 4 months ago. I had no idea that fuel quality could vary so much from pump to pump. If it really can make such a difference, then I'll just run the car on super plus 97-99 RON from Shell / Esso / BP from now on then. I mean it cost me £140 to fill up from empty last time, what difference is £145 going to make?!

It's going back in tomorrow to be plugged in to the diagnostics, so will get them to give me the fuel trim readings etc (although they'll mean nothing to me). Then I'll get them to reset eveything, chuck a few tins of cleaner through it and see what happens before I start paying for them to pull things apart!

After having run a couple of cans of BG44k through it I now generally fill her up with Tesco 99 momentum - although it's supermarket fuel, it comes from a different 'holding stock' to the regular unleaded.

The situation with mine is a bit unique, no access to top quality fuel and 2 years of sitting still in a tropical country prior to me taking ownership must have done something to the fuel system. Plus recently running the tank empty probably didn't help either.

I hope that with you it is simply a matter of fuel cleaner for a while to keep the problems away. I know how annoying it is for the light to keep coming on. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

So took the car back to my indy today. They suggested a few cans of fuel system cleaner before they start pulling things apart and burning hours looking for faults too.

They had a look at all of the data, and everything seemed fine except for the long term fuel trim on bank 2, which was up at around 5%.

I've just put 50 litres of super plus in the car, and will add a can of BG 44K when it arrives.

I've had the same problem on my 06sc, had all the air leaks checked and rechecked, inlet gaskets replaced, replaced the lamber's, i got to the point of the car was going to go !
I spoke to a bloke from Hull who said all it needed was the latest engine software, so for £50 per hour he would do this for me, well what did i have to loose , i went to Hull met him, he worked on the rover for 1 and a half hours, job done, no more lean on bank 2 or check engine light, if you want his number let me know

Mine supposedly has the latest engine software but not the gearbox software (Faultmate, Blackbox provides the files from Land Rover as part of the service. So I can reflash all the necessary ECUs and when I checked the other day, my EMS is up to date). May be the crap quality fuel here.
