Battery??

Hi all

Had a few issues during the past months with the car.

First one, one of these days, the passenger door lock didn't open (not an extreme cold problem as we don't have that over here)

Second, the rev counter sometimes seems to go bonkers, even though the engine is running ok. The other day was idling at 300 rpms, and other time at 1500 rpm.

Yesterday, before starting the car, went to the ''753 code'' and saw that the battery was reading 11.5-12v. Then it's running 12-13v after start. (my idea is that it should charge at 14v)

So question is, are those issues above signs that the battery is going to pack up?

13 volts when running sounds more like impending alternator failure. If the battery still has enough to start the car then it's probably OK although it won't stay that way if it doesn't get charged properly.

needs to be 12.5v not running, the 14v at idle is not too bad if thats under load. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

The car is now 6 years old, still with the original battery.

One of the very earliest TDV8's.

I would do yourself a favour and order a new one up. The day you really need the car will be the day it finally gives up on you.! Ash

At 6 years old you definitely need a new battery.
From what you describe you may also have an issue with your alternartor.
Start the engine, run at 2000-2500rpm, you should get about 14V+.
If not, wait until new battery is fitted and try the same again.
If you don't achieve 14V you need to have your alternator checked.

Will do that test tomorrow, as that alternator options seems very likely. If i remember, in the first year there was an issue with the alternator bearing, but at the time didn't experienced any problems.

But as the car is asking for the yearly service, will have everything checked.

Thanks for all your help guys... Thumbs Up

You need to get a proper multimeter on it, mine reads 13.6-8 no load as soon as the lights are switched on it dips to 12.7 and comes back up slowly, under full load it dips to 11.9 and rises as the revs come up, this is no good but the ign light does not come on and it starts fine (but is a petrol) Dont forget to not just check at the battery also check at the bulkhead connection and at the +ve coming out of the alternator as you may have a bad lead. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!
